Bill Condon, director of Disney's live-action hit "Beauty and the Beast", is in talks with Universal Pictures to direct a remake of "The Bride of Frankenstein". The original 1935 classic, starring Elsa Lanchester and Boris Karloff, was directed by James Whale. Condon wrote and directed the 1998 film "Gods and Monsters", in which James Whale was a central character (portrayed by Ian McKellen).
Update: Universal confirmed today that Bill Condon will direct "Bride of Frankenstein" and also gave a release date: February 14, 2019. The actress playing the lead will be announced soon. Universal also released a picture of the actors who will people its "Dark Universe" franchise, including Russell Crowe (Dr. Jekyll), Javier Bardem (Frankenstein's monster), and Johnny Depp (the Invisible Man).
Update: Deadline is reporting that production on "The Bride of Frankenstein" has hit a snag. The script is being rewritten and the 2019 release date has been scrapped. Angelina Jolie, who is to play the title role, and Javier Bardem are reportedly still interested and will wait until production gears up again.
