I found info that says Purina voluntarily withdrew canned and pouches of Mighty Dog but not any other of their food. Other Purina products appear to be safe for now.

I can't find anything on any news or the FDA site that says 37 more brands were added.

I decided to make my dogs' food. I give them Solid gold dry and just a little canned but I'm going to make their food and treats.

Good Decision, Joan. I'm doing the same. I spent some time on Dogster.com and found this valuable info. There were 17 pages of posts on this thread. Here are just 2 of them:

Yes, it is. I'm sorry to hear about your dog. We've lost three cats to kidney failure (2 of the 4 we lost between July 2005 & January 2006 were to kidney failure), so unfortunately I know more about that horrible disease in pets than I ever wanted to. With all three, though, we had to make the decision to euthanize them. We just couldn't watch them suffer knowing there was nothing more we could do.

Neither can I.

We feed our cats Solid Gold dry cat food, and I think since it's a natural holistic food it should be safe.

I found this on the LA Times website:

"The FDA said the investigation was focused on problems with wheat gluten, which the manufacturer said had been coming from a new supplier."

Solid Gold does not use wheat in their pet food products.

you need to call the FDA i am going to list their numbers for everyone.

Thank you for posting these numbers.

Yes, I posted that it was canned and pouch foods in my article, and that dry was not affected by this recall. Sorry, I should have included that in my first post here too.

I have also decided to give my cats Solid Gold Katz N Flocken www.solidgoldhealth.com After review all the rest of the companies that receive ingredients from Menu Foods, I will continue to make my own dog food for Annie.

Yes, the vets are recommending NO KIBBLE also but the media has not yet done so and, of course, Menu Foods has not killed enough animals with their testing to verify the toxin is in their client brands'kibble yet. Other brands that are safe are Natural Balance and Atta Dog/Atta Cat. There are probably more but I'm using Solid Gold right now-better safe than sorry!

I was in my vet's office yesterday and he said "as long as you stay away from the canned food you will be OK". I trust this man more than I trust anybody in the media or the alarmists who are blowing this issue into something bigger than it is. And yes, I have suffered the heartbreak of losing a cat to kidney failure, but we don't believe it was caused by the food he was eating. It was just one of those things that happens. I also lost one to liver failure, and we don't know the "why" for that, either.

We all make our decisions on the information available both in the media and from private sources.

Based on that information and the statistics now available from the FDA and the veterinarians who prefer to err on the side of caution, I have made mine. We are now being given the "Wheat Gluten" and "Rat Poison" and "Anti-freeze" theories. I don't think we're being given the straight story yet and until I do, I will not take any chances with my animals lives. It is easier to switch to a brand does not receive ingredients from Menu Foods. I prefer to be safe than sorry. All my animals are alive and well and I intend to keep them that way!

I went to the vet today for an allergy check-up on Annie from 2 weeks ago. Of course, the conversation turned to pet food. He is aware that I have been cooking for Annie for over a month because of her allergies. He said that he is more concerned about the pollen in the air than her food allergies right now and that Solid Gold is fine and if her food allergies flair up to switch her to Solid Gold Millenium (with Bison instead of lamb). So I asked him, "What do you think?" My very conservative, politically right vet said said that the veterinarians in the office were discussing how ridiculous some of the claims were. He said that liver failure and renal disease has been the biggest killer of pets since 1972. So it is hard to determine how many more animals died this year than in previous years from this problem. Rat poison causes blood to clot so they don't believe that claim. Anti-freeze also has special properties. The Wheat Gluten or another ingredient is suspect because if "someone" wanted to poison a lot of animals right away, it could be contaminated from outside the U.S. or Canada and shipped here. :oOMG, I couldn't believe he said that! The vets are also stumped and aren't buying into all the rehtoric coming out of the pet food companies.

I am going to continue to cook for Annie and the cats most of the time and supplement with Solid Gold, when needed.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) was informed today, April 16, 2007, that Natural Balance Pet Foods has received consumer complaints regarding the Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Foods. The company does not know the cause of the problems, but has received reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems. Although the company is stating that the problems seem to be focused on one particular lot, as a precautionary measure, the company is pulling all dates of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food from the shelves. The company is advising consumers to discontinue feeding all Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food.

The FDA is working closely with Natural Balance and is actively investigating this problem. There is no indication at this time whether this is related to the ongoing pet food recalls.
