I just read over at another forum that Walmart is discontinuing the Mainstay Yarn....has anybody else heard this??? I use that stuff alot. Is this true does anybody know?

Sorry to say but it is true. I was at our Wal-Mart on Sunday and there is sign over that section of yarn stating they will not be selling it anymore. As a matter of fact, I think there were only about 4 skeins of black left. I too am disappointed. I like using their yarns also.

Hadn't heard that, and haven't been far enough into Wal-Mart to get to the yarn section to notice how much is left here in Clarksburg. I am sorry to hear it as I also enjoyed using the Mainstay Yarn. Are they replacing it with something else?

ok I went last night after work. Ya'll, I scored the last three skeins of the blue ridge varigated that I like so much, and I also got the last three skeins of another tan/maroon varigated too. The only other colors they had left were black and navy. may go back and pick up a couple in the black before they're gone. other than that, the stock was totally depleted.

It is totally gone at my Walmart, never even saw it go on sale DARN but do you think that they are just going to bring in their own line of yarns ? I see they now have the NOBO brand yarns ?

I checked at my Wal-Mart last night and they had just a few skeins of Mainstay yarn left - and they were the same price they always have been...at my store the Mainstay has been replaced by some Caron yarn.

Thanks for the information about Mainstay yarn. In the morning I will make a trip to get more. It is my favvorite yarn to make blankets for Project Linus. It is so soft.

Yes, it's true...Mainstay is gone! It was never on sale in my area (PA). However, Walmart has some new NoBo yarns in pretty spring colors...sport weight. I'm also sorry to see the Mainstay go...liked it better than Red Heart, though the colors were limited. Hope they replace it with something similar/equal.charkitty

It never went on sale here either. I sent an email to walmart, expressing my displeasure over the decision to remove the yarn, and told them it was kinda [censored] that they didn't even put it on sale or nothing. ehh...you know how that goes.

I am really upset with Walmart. They should give some warning. I am in dire need of at least a partial skein of No. 1430 Soft Burgundy to finish an afghan I planned to give as a wedding gift. Can anyone help me out? Will pay reasonable price and postage.

Mainstay was made by Bernat or so I read elsewhere..just a bit of trivia

I don't think so, because "Mainstay" is a brand that walmart has on other items in the store, such as sheets, towels and linens, lots of house hold items carry the "Mainstay" brand name, and Walmart is the only place I have ever seen this brand. I assume it's a brand that some company makes solely for Walmart. I don't think that Bernat makes sheets and towels and stuff......or do they??
Posted By: hobittwife Re: Mainstay Yarn - 06/13/06 12:06 PM
It is quite possible that Bernat is the factory that makes the Mainstay Yarn. And then a sheet and towel manufacturer could be making the Mainstay sheets and towels. And so on and so forth.

Oh! I get it!! So it probably IS a "walmart" brand, and walmart gets all these different companies to make the stuff. Ok, that makes sense.

Ya, to my knowledge, WM doesn't make its own stuff...other major manufacturers do but WM sticks their label on it. So, in many instances, I imagine, you get comparable name-brand quality with a WM-branded label and, therefore, a cheaper price

For example - I got a new electric skillet for Christmas. It is a GE skillet, but stamped on the bottom is says "Made by GE for WalMart".

I read in another group that Walmart is going to rename all their Mainstay products and that the yarn would be coming back.

This person said she worked at Walmart, and the employees had not been told the new name or when the yarn would be available.

That's cool!! I'll be looking out for that. By the way, I can't believe how many looks this thread has gotten since I started it.

How do we know that Bernat made the yarn under the Mainstays name? I checked a label and it doesn't say who it was made by. Just that it was manufactured for Wal-Mart. I got on this forum to help out my mom. She also loves the Mainstays, not too thrilled by the Red Heart. She is currently working on an afghan and needs more True Red #1707. I'm going to get on the Bernat website and see if I can find this color/number. If anyone has anymore info on the Mainstays line, please let me know, thanks!

I originally posted that...I read it elsewhere. I'll see if I can remember where I saw it some months back....
