Hi, im new to soapmaking. most of the soaps i've made turn out nice, but they always leave a funny smell, even though i add plenty of fo or eo. this happens with CP and HP. can anyone help?

Is your oil or fat fresh? If not soap can end up smelling rancid.

Are you using higher than normal temperatures to mix your oils and lye? My temps are about 100 degrees whan I mix the two.

I do HP olive oil soap. Before I got used to the scent of my soaps, they smelled faintly foodish or doughy to me. Now I am used to it and even like it. Not that it was bad, just different. Is that the scent you mean?
