This Sunday, August 27th, is the second annual National Cinema Day in the US. Tickets are only $4 with over 3,000 movie theaters participating. Among the films featured is a re-release of "American Graffiti", which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. There is a National Cinema Day trailer on YouTube for more info.

I wish they would do this in South Africa ... I haven't been to the movies for such a long time and it would be a treat for sure.

Anyway. Magical movies - they entertain and fascinate all.

What are some of our favourite movies? A difficult question because there are so many 'depends' included in the question, still, I remember Cyrano de Bergerac, The Rocky Horror Picture show and Midnight Express as three films that stood out particularly for me, and which I still think about now and then.

The numbers are in for National Cinema Day in the US and they are really good - an increase from last year's numbers. I don't know if "Barbenheimer" fever has made it to South Africa yet but the release of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" here has really boosted box office receipts as well. Like you, I tend to prefer the classics. However, there are some intriguing new releases set to play the Venice Film Festival which opens tomorrow. I'll be reporting on some of those titles in upcoming newsletters.
