The mind is like a car battery — it recharges by running.

Bill Watterson

Every day, for 10 years, cartoonist Bill Watterson delighted readers with a new story in his beloved syndicated comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes." But that kind of round-the-clock ingenuity is no easy feat. His secret? Recharging the mind by letting it play. “I’ve had to cultivate a kind of mental playfulness,” Watterson said in the same 1990 commencement speech at Kenyon College where he gave the quote above. “A playful mind is inquisitive, and learning is fun.” In other words, creative ideas come when the mind is encouraged to wander into new areas, exploring wherever your natural curiosity may lead. Instead of “shutting off” your brain at the end of a long day, reinvigorate it by indulging your innate sense of wonder. If you follow what makes learning fun, it’s bound to lead you to new ideas.

You just can’t live in that negative way... make way for the positive day.

Bob Marley

Bob Marley’s music has achieved an enduring legacy that finds new listeners every day. Hailing from Jamaica, he was a pioneer of reggae music and helped popularize the genre around the world. When he converted to Rastafari (a religious and social movement) in the 1970s, the songs he played with his band, Bob Marley and the Wailers, took on more obvious spiritual themes. In lyrics such as this one (from the 1976 song “Positive Vibration”), Marley advocated for love and acceptance, and especially a positive outlook on the world. His songs are still beloved today in part because of their timeless message of inclusivity, optimism, and embracing our shared humanity.

Risk something or forever sit with your dreams.

Herb Brooks

Throughout his Hall of Fame career, ice hockey's Herb Brooks proved that anything is possible. As head coach of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men's team, Brooks guided a group of ragtag amateur players to an upset victory over the heavily favored Soviet powerhouse, in an event that's now immortally known as the "Miracle on Ice." Having experienced an unlikely Cinderella story himself, Brooks knew well that happiness and success are rarely achieved without encountering a sense of vulnerability along the way. It may seem safer to shy away from a seemingly impossible challenge, but it’s often better to take a risk than to always wonder "what if?"

Aging is an extraordinary process whereby you become the person that you always should have been.

David Bowie

To be known as the greatest chameleon in music is quite a feat, but it’s a fitting title for David Bowie. His vision led him through pop, rock, electronic, and industrial music, and expanded his creative scope into film, fashion, and beyond. Given that he was an artist known for constantly evolving his sound and look, it’s no surprise that Bowie was not a huge fan of nostalgia. In a conversation with “Gear” magazine in his early 50s, he eschewed the idea of “pining for youth.” He chose instead to live in the present, believing that with age comes authenticity, and a chance to be your true self.

My life is full of mistakes. They’re like pebbles that make a good road.

Beatrice Wood

Rising to fame as an influential voice of the Dadaist movement, ceramicist Beatrice Wood's avant-garde approach to crafting lustrous pottery pushed artistic boundaries. Throughout her 105-year-long life, Wood fought to bring the absurd and unfamiliar into the mainstream, though she was also well aware that straying from orthodoxy would come with challenges. With this quote, she expresses that mistakes are a part of life, and rather than getting discouraged by setbacks, we should anticipate them. We can shift our perspective to see “mistakes” as learning experiences that teach us, shape our path, and ultimately mold us into who we are.

The worst enemy to creativity is self doubt.

Sylvia Plath

It’s no wonder Sylvia Plath became a poet; she’d been keeping daily diaries and journals since she was a child. This particular quote comes from the journals Plath kept during her time at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She was grappling with the decision of going to summer school at Harvard for a writing course she wished to take, or heading home for the season. Ultimately she decided to go home, noting, “Everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise.” Not going to Harvard wouldn’t hurt her creativity, she figured, as long as she didn’t doubt her own abilities.

Vulnerability is important. You can’t let your skin get too thick.

Al Pacino

Al Pacino, one of the greatest actors to ever grace the stage and screen, is also one of a select few to win an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony, thus earning acting's triple crown. He has starred in timeless classics such as "The Godfather," "Scarface," and "Dog Day Afternoon," though achieving that level of renown didn't come without challenges along the way. With these words, spoken during a 2015 interview with "The Talks," he reminds us that it’s paramount to not close ourselves off from emotion or adversity. "You want to keep yourself open," said the actor. "You’re looking for a risk you can take, a challenge, the fact that you fall down and get up and go on."

There is nothing stronger than a broken woman who has rebuilt herself.

Hannah Gadsby

Hannah Gadsby burst onto the comedy scene in 2006 when she won the Raw Comedy competition for new talent. In 2018, her bracing stand-up television special, “Nanette,” won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special, as well as a Peabody Award. In the performance, Gadsby shares her experiences being subjected to abuse and shame, then brings the audience around to this quote. It’s a brave and powerful message that has resonated with audiences the world over.

Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard.

Iain S. Thomas

Iain Thomas is a writer and new media artist based in Cape Town, South Africa, who has built a career around his love of words. This quote appears in his four-book series “I Wrote This for You,” a collection of beautiful thoughts and images published in collaboration with photographer Jon Ellis. The quote continues, “Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.” As the past two decades have seen Thomas’ fame steadily increase, his work continues to explore the wonders of the world and the words we use to describe them.

If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.

George Harrison

This thought-provoking quote comes from the lyrics of George Harrison’s song “Any Road” (though it’s often misattributed to Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”). Harrison started writing the song in 1988 and it became his last single and the opening track of his final studio album, “Brainwashed,” released posthumously in 2003. The “quiet Beatle’s” interest in Indian culture and Hinduism influenced his career as a musician and songwriter from the mid-1960s until his death. In “Any Road,” Harrison offers us reassurance that we eventually end up where we’re meant to be, even if we aren’t always sure of our direction in life.
