Autumn begins on the equinox, the day the Sun crosses the equator. The earliest known civilizations celebrated the equinoxes, and they're still celebrated in many places. One of the biggest autumn celebrations is the Chinese Moon Festival. A traditional Chinese garden has a moon-watching pavilion.

Apologies to people in the southern hemisphere. I know that for you the September equinox is the beginning of spring, not autumn. But I found It kinda klunky to try to write about the northern and southern equinoxes in the same article. And both most of my readers and my information sources are northern hemisphere.

But greetings to everyone south of the equator as the spring equinox comes around.

Spring Equinox
You've made it through the winter and watched the food stores diminish. But the days are getting longer and green shoots are appearing. Spring is on the way. The festivals of the vernal equinox emphasize rebirth and renewal. In many cultures the equinox is also the New Year.

Yes, and way up north, the days are getting shorter and the garden is fading away. <sigh>

In 2021 the September equinox occurs on September 22 when the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south. This event occurs at the same moment worldwide, but clock time will differ depending on your time zone. It will happen at 19:21 UTC [Greenwich Mean Time]. Here are a few northern hemisphere times from the USA's west coast to western Europe: 12:21 PDT, 15:21 EDT, 20:21 BST, 21:21 CEST.

Did you see the Harvest Moon last night? I saw it briefly, and also Jupiter not far from it in the sky. But it wasn't long afterwards that the Moon was just peeking dramatically behind clouds, and Jupiter was obscured. The Harvest Moon is linked to the Equinox. It's always the full moon nearest to the Equinox, so it can be in either September or October.
