May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls. It is also a day to consider the representation of Indigenous women in film and media.
With that in mind, here is a link to the documentary "Sisters Rising" which premiered on PBS last month. Directed by Willow O'Feral and Brad Heck, the doc follows six Native women and their empowering response to the violence in their lives. The film also highlights an incredible and dangerous loophole in US law which prevents tribal law enforcement from prosecuting non-Natives who commit rape and other offenses against women on Indian land.
