Following his early death, his wife Anna donated money to Harvard College Observatory to complete his catalogue of stellar spectra. On this day in 1804 – March 8th – American astronomer and telescope maker Alvan Clark was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts.
In 1846 he founded Alvan Clark & Sons, which made astronomical telescopes and instruments. Notably, the company made the lenses for large refracting telescopes at Lick Observatory and Yerkes Observatory.
