The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles just acquired a huge trove of pre-cinema objects. Richard Balzar's widow Patricia Bellinger has donated his massive collection of visual objects to the Museum. Items include magic lanterns and magic lantern slides, praxinoscopes ( which used strips of film and mirrors to give the illusion of moving images), paintings, and shadow puppets. The donation will form one of the Academy's inaugural exhibits - The Path to Cinema: Highlights from the Richard Balzar Collection. If there are no more delays due to Covid-19, the Academy Museum will be open to visitors on April 30th, 2021.
