Although I'm not the movie editor, last night I finally had a chance to watch the first installment of Enslaved. A 6-part docuseries, on CBC, (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) tracing the transatlantic ship routes of slavery. In the first episode, presenter, human rights activist and actor Samuel L. Jackson returns to Gabon in Africa to discover his own roots, while teams of divers and archeologists discover clues of two notable shipwrecks, the Nimble and the Guerrero in the Florida Keys.

Often these highly touted programs fail to impress me with their content, but this does not disappoint. This is such an emotionally rich journey, so worth watching.

Life isn't easy for anyone, including wolves around Banff, Alberta and Vancouver Island.

I saw a wolf once on a drive heading from Alberta to British Columbia, and something about this intelligent animal has always intrigued me. The experience stayed with me always.

Did you know that our beloved dogs are still closely related in nature and behavior to the wolf? You sure can teach an old dog new tricks, but essentially it remains a wolf despite the cute collar, manicure, and hairdo. That adorable creature on your sofa has a genetic history.

A gentle reminder:

Tomorrow, on November 11, we celebrate Remembrance Day and Veteran's Day in honor of those who fought for our freedom.

It's a day designated to respect,
a moment of remembering.
And whatever we face today,
is nothing in comparison
to those sacrifices given as a gift,
from those,
who no longer speak.

While this year holds its own challenges, we can still reflect and honor those who deserve our gratitude.
A moment of silence to remember, a lifetime of tolerance to share the universal truth that we are all human.

Sometimes it seems that our lives are dominated by only bad news when really, there are so many amazing and kind people out there making a difference.

Big or small, these random acts of kindness have put a smile on my face and I hope they will inspire you too.

This one is very powerful, tears may ensure.

Have a great week, be kind, stay safe, it doesn't cost anything to smile, even with a mask on.

Tooting My Own Horn

It seems rather arrogant and selfish, but how else can I promote myself unless I say: Here I am as a writer.

What readers sometimes forget is that they have the power and the writer is really at their mercy. By simply buying a book from any writer you can propel them to stardom.

It really is as simple as that.

Social media and building a platform are very time-consuming prospects but also rewarding when people reach out and comment with kindness. And it
is a must-do to build a following.

I've been slowly building my own website, https://monikarmartynauthor.wordpress.com/ and would love to have you visit.

You can also find samples of my fiction on Wattpad, a Canadian writing platform.

https://www.wattpad.com/myworks/247599838-black-aura and https://www.wattpad.com/myworks/247611444-stella%27s-silent-song-a-collection-of-short-stories
(please enter short story collection through black aura if link is not active)

And on Vocal,

https://vocal.media/stories/consequences-an62w20vlj

I'd appreciate the visit, a "like and comment" would be wonderful.

Thanks for following me on BellaOnline, it's been so wonderful to have you visit my posts.

It seems winter has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere. Although it looks pretty outside, it becomes tougher to stay motivated and get some physical activity. And since we are all about to indulge in more sugary foods, getting some exercise is crucial.

To keep a fit and healthy body, I practice these 15-minute yoga routines and seldom need to visit my chiropractor. And everyone can invest 15 precious minutes of their day to an activity that not only revitalizes your body but also your mind. These videos are hosted by Evita Ochel and I think they are fabulous. Check them out.

On a side note, in the province of Alberta, we are now heading back into lockdown. To some people that is very traumatic, so if you know someone that lives alone and is isolated, pick up the phone or fire off a text. Small acts of kindness go a long way. Stay safe, stay healthy, please wear a mask, wash your hands and keep your distance. If not for me, then do it for the doctors, nurses, first responders.

By now you've figured out that this Canadian Culture Editor loves animals and nature. So this week here is a shout-out to possums or opossums. I bet you had no idea how beneficial these critters are to our environment. They are recent immigrants to our country who have been illegally crossing the border but do a great job cleaning up and consuming Lyme disease-causing ticks by the millions. Thank them for that!

Stay safe and healthy, be kind to people and animals.
