On this day, I'm home. Been cruising - 30 days in the Pacific. Took in a Learn at Sea - DNA and crimesolving. Thought of you as you do seminars at sea too. It was a great trip.

STS-125 was the fifth and final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope.

Talking about satellites, that is the only down part of cruising - the connection to the satellite is S-L-O-W. As a result, there is a vacation from the Internet! :)

Angie, I'm glad you asked about this. I knew the satellite wasn't still operational - don't know if it's still orbiting - but looked to see the date (1981). And noted that it was launched on the 17th of May, not the 11th. I obviously misread my notes at one point and then copied the error from year to year.

The Adler Planetarium was the first planetarium in the western hemisphere.

On this day in 1978 - May 12th - ESA's VILSPA ground station (now the European Space Astronomy Centre) in Spain was officially opened by their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.
VILSPA was one of European Space Agency's original tracking stations and has been responsible for providing telemetry, tracking and command support to ESA as well as non-ESA satellites.

On this day in 2009 - May 14th - the European Space Agency (ESA) launched the Herschel Space Observatory.Launched along with the Planck Space Observatory, from 2009-2013 Herschel observed the cosmos in infrared.
