Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin - born May 10, 1900 in Wendover, England

How does the composition of a star affect the temperature? In 1925 a young woman solved this puzzle in her doctoral thesis. Her analysis was a great breakthrough in astrophysics. Otto Struve described it as "the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy."

Achievements may be honored with prizes and medals, but few get represented as children's toys. However Lego responded to a proposal to showcase women in space and astronomy by making a Lego set representing four such women and their major contributions. One of them was Sally Ride - astronaut, physicist, engineer and educator.

Helen Sharman - born May 30, 1963 in Sheffield, England

Chosen to train as an astronaut, Sharman was the first Briton in space and the first woman to visit the Mir space station. The mission, which included Soviet cosmonauts Anatoly Artsebarsky and Sergei Krikalev, was launched on May 18, 1991, and lasted eight days. On board Mir, Sharman carried out a series of experiments. Since then she's continued her work as a scientist as well as doing science outreach work.
