Last Saturday, Blaine Bettinger was in Richmond VA. He gave four great lectures. There was something for everyone of every level of their knowledge of DNA. It was well attended, almost 200 people. He was very much so approachable during the breaks. Topics included Using Autosomal DNA for Genealogical Research, Are You Doing Everything to Icentify Your DNA Matches?, Using Autosomal DNA for 18th and 19th Century Mysteries, and Using DNAPainter to Map Your DNA.

On Tuesday night, Dr. Vilar from the National Geographic Geno project gave a talk on their project.

Needless to say, my head is swimming and brimming over.

The past few days I've connected with a couple of relatively close cousins of my mother-in-law and my husband and two new cousins of mine too. Fun!

While on a recent cruise, Dr. Gary Kovenar (sp?) gave several lectures on DNA and crime solving. The first part ss were technical about touch DNA and how just a small amount can be replicated to provide a specimen that can be tested. Later he dicussed the OJ Simpson case and the Jon Benet Ramsey cases. The last lecture had to do with being sure you want to be tested. I spoke to him briefly and told him I was a genealogist and he asked me if I was happy with the ethnicity discoveries. I told him I was fine with my results. As I thought about it later though I realized I didn't put that much emphasis on the ethnicity results; I'm more interested in connecting with people and proving the research. My ethnicity become apparent once you have your paper trail ironed out. Of course, you never know when you might have some surprises turn up. They can be overwhelming and/or helpful.

Hello Angie,

Who administers DNA tests? I wouldn't have the first clue of where to go here in Johannesburg, though of course I haven't ever looked. But I do think I would have enjoyed those lectures you speak of, they sound fascinating. It also sounds that you really enjoy your continuous research as a genealogist which is never ending.

Imagine the 'imaginary' genealogy trail that could be done on the soapies and the shenanigans they all get up to! Now there might be a way to catch out the script and story writers ... though that is a completely different subject. Anyway.

Cheers

Lestie, I'm not sure about what is offered in Johannesburg. Here, Ancestry.com has the largest database but also available is MyHeritage.com, FamilyTreeDNA.com. You would have to investigate to see which company offers DNA testing in your neck of the woods. :)
