If you look at your calendar to find today's date, you can see the month, days of the week and maybe some appointments. But you're also looking at something that tracks Earth's journey around the Sun, reflects three thousand years of history and helps to hold our society together. Sun and Moon and the Calendar

It's easy to see the ancient inspiration for our own calendar. Although the Egyptians originally used a lunar calendar, the civil calendar is over 4500 years old. It was a solar calendar based on a year of 365 days and 12 months that were 30 days long. You'll probably realize that this left five days unaccounted for. The five days needed to complete the solar year were treated in different ways to the days within the calendar. Here is a picture of an ancient calendar in the temple complex of Karnak.

Here is a Mayan calendar stone. Their culture flourished in Central America from about 2000 B.C. to 1500 A.D. Their dating system was highly complex - but quite accurate - and related to the Sun, the Moon, and the planet Venus. Used toegether were a 260-day calendar and a 365-day calendar.

Because of the alignments of its stones, Stonehenge is often considered a kind of ancient calendar. But Stonehenge probably didn't look like this!
