This is something I believe in very strongly. Small businesses can only stay in business if we work with them. Yarn may be less expensive at a Michael's, etc., but you lose the personal element and the yarn isn't as nice. Smaller yarn companies like Berroco can be almost as inexpensive, but the yarn will be of better quality. AND... the store will also have super indie yarn creators and dyers, so you are supporting creativity. Not to mention that local yarn stores are often the ones that stock yarn that's better for the environment!
