Did you know there are artworks on the Moon? And “Moon Museum” hitched a ride attached to Apollo 11's lunar module. But the “Fallen Astronaut” statuette lies on the Moon's surface. Here's how it got there.

David Scott set the Fallen Astronaut and plaque on the ground on the rim of Hadley Rille. A rille is a long deep valley that may be straight or winding. Rille comes from the German word for groove and the term was applied to these features as they were observed telescopically at the beginning of the 19th century.

Hadley Rille is a V-shaped valley winding for more than 100 km (60 mi). It's 1.5 km (0.9 mile) wide and 400 metres (1,300 feet) deep.

Here is the advertisement placed by the Waddell Gallery for the proposed sale of signed replicas of the Fallen Astronaut. David Scott sent his objections to this commercial enterprise, and NASA persuaded all concerned to drop the project. Commercial benefits from the space program weren't approved. (Perhaps 'leaned on" would be more appropriate than "persuaded".)

Fallen Astronaut was referred to as “the first art installation on the Moon” by CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite. But almost no one knew at the time that there was already an art installation on the Moon.

The Moon Museum is a fusion of art and science wrapped up in the excitement of space exploration. But what is it? Does it really exist? Can we visit it? Here is an unusual story from the days when men walked on the Moon.
