Each day for six months after the winter solstice, the Sun rises a bit higher in the sky. It reaches the maximum height at the summer solstice, the longest day. Evidence of rituals and festivals at the times of the solstices goes back thousands of years.

Stonehenge - a well known neolithic site in southern England - is associated with the solstices. Here is a beautifully atmospheric summer solstice sunrise at Stonehenge. Noted photographer Max Alexander photographed the misty morning in 2008. Stonehenge is very photogenic, but I particularly like this photo that has captured the beauty and the mystery of this ancient place.

Two years ago the June solstice coincided with a full moon. Here are crowds gathered on Glastonbury Tor under the full solstice moon. The 14th century St Michael's Tower has been associated with myths and legends for millennia, including Arthurian legends.

However the super-sized Moon isn't a living legend. It's an illusion created by photographing the tor from a long way away. If you had been part of the crowd there, the Moon wouldn't have looked enormous.

Bonfires are a feature of many summer solstice celebrations. Here is an impressive one. It's Johannisfeuer (St John's Eve fire), photo taken by Ralf Johann in 2012 near Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.

Harpists Morwenna Louttit-Vermaat and Josie Felce welcome the rising of the midsummer solstice sun as they play their handmade harps on Selsley Common, Gloucestershire, England.

The Revetlla de Sant Joan (Festival of St John) includes fireworks and bonfires on the beach for this celebration near the summer solstice.

The Sun was at its greatest annual distance from the celestial equator at 10:07 UTC this morning. (That's 5:07 EDT.) For the northern hemisphere the Sun was farthest north of the celestial equator and for the southern hemisphere farthest south. For those in the north, summer has officially arrived!

It was a bit strange this year. We had early dusk as the storms came through and by 6:30-7pm it was dark.
