Most trade books don't list the reading level. But, some teachers require certain grade levels for all books and so some mark the reading level.

Hi from the uk. I am a children's librarian (public library), age remit 0-16 years. We might use the reading levels on easy readers as a guide for broad banding on the shelves (easy, middling, difficult)but we consciously don't use them to guide choice, especially for parents as they then push their kids to read 'the right level' or get ahead of the class, instead of letting them pick for enjoyment. We don't stock reading scheme readers for the same reason.

Excellent! I'm so glad to hear that.

Here in the US there is such a push to "level" the books. Parents and some teachers want to mark the books with a reading level. Heaven forbid if the child actually selects a book just because it is of interest. (Sorry, sarcasm creeping in.)

Are electronic reading programs (e.g., Accelerated Reader) being used much in the UK?

When I started school we had these things, it was by color and a few books by color, I was the first in my class to finish reading all the books. I haven't seen any reading levels since then.
