I just realized the other day that I have not had a haircut in over a year and this is because my hair stylist is now so far away from my home.

At first when she moved it wasn't so bad. I still lived in my apartment and it only added another 10 min. to my 15 min. drive. Now it can be nearly an hour drive in hostile traffic.

She is the best but I'm thinking now that I live in a house I need to find somebody nearby. I hate when this happens! How far would you drive for a great hair stylist? I used to go see her every 4 months.

I used to drive half hour. I have long straight hair. You would think this would be easy for a stylist to trim but no way. In the past, stylists would see me come in the door and I would walk out with some version of bobbed hair. Inevitably I ended up crying for at least a month. My hair is thick in texture and slow to grow but apparently extremely fun to "style."

I found one stylist in 25 years that worked with me. I loved how he trimmed and treated my hair. I appreciated his tips to keep long healthy hair. Perhaps the care I received had something to do with him having long hair himself? When he moved out of state I altogether stopped going to stylists.

I look forward to reading your comments.

Monica, I know exactly what you and Deb mean! When I find a great stylist, always in the back of my mind I know the relationship will end... You find someone you get along great with, they treat your hair right, make it grow, make it look fab, and then --they disappear. It can be downright disappointing. I guess that's why there are so many kitchen beauticians. smile

All that said, I'd drive about 25 miles for a stylist that I trust. Can't trust your hair to just anybody.

Thanks for sharing April. The disappearing trick was always a favorite of mine back in my 20's. I used to feel so disappointed but like you said I started learning that all relationships (massage, trainers, facialist, etc.) end at some point.

What is a kitchen beautician? Never heard that before.

I am actually going to see her today. Could not stand the thought of some new person screwing up my hair before my vacation. This will probably be the last time though frown

Same with my massage guy. He's sooo good but sooo far. I won't be giving him up anytime soon though cuz he's that good.

Hi Monica -- our Bella Online Exercise Guru!

You're right, although I hadn't thought about it before you mentioned it, all those people --trainers, everybody will disappear at some point.

A kitchen beautician is someone who performs her magic at home. My sister and I used to be kitchen beauticians for our friends. Poor things, our friends and cousins were our 'testers,' we were theirs too. We tried out different looks and haircolors on each other. I wouldn't do that now, I promise you. smile Too risky, but when you're young, you go for it.

LOL! My mom was a kitchen beautician. She gave me a horrible feathered haircut in junior high and I told her if she ever touched my hair again I would have to run away from home.

She used to take scissors to my sons hair too and he would come home crying about it so I threatened not to let him visit and spend nights there anymore.

Do you think ethnic grandmas are more likely to do what they feel is right without even asking your opinion?

Laughing...about the horrible feather cut. LOL

That was funny too about your son's hair.

I do think ethnic grandmas do what they feel is right, regardless. I've seen it many times. The mother of a child can say, "I don't want you to do thus and such with Tara..."
The ethnic grandmother will roll her eyes. She might not say anything, but you know she is going to do what she wants with Tara, regardless of what the baby mama said.

I think ethnic grandmas do this because they feel like my Nana felt. She'd been a mother longer than my mother had been alive! So she didn't need some young whippersnapper telling her what to do. smile

It's the 'Big Mama' syndrome.

Not more than two hours. My last hair cut was a new one that is in the same building as my new aesthetician and dentist in Rimouski which is less than one hour away from here; I love the hair cut she did to me but I hate the way she works. I will try one in Mont-Joli next time and that is about ten minutes away from here. The one I had before I moved here was great, it is less than two hours from here and she would be worth it but I hate that place so much so I doubt I would ever do this (i dont even go back to visit a friend and her dog - thats how much i hate that place).

I will go up to 100 miles. I just prepare a wonderful day of things to see and do while at or near the location.
