Movie and TV Queen, Barbara Stanwyck, was born on 16 July 1907 in Brooklyn, New York.
She spent her early career starring in an impressive run of drama, suspense and noir movies, and in her later years became famous again as a TV actress in series such as
The Big Valley (1965-69),
The Thorn Birds (1983) and
Dynasty (1985).
Stanwyck died in January 1990 of emphysema and chronic obstructive lung disease, her illness exacerbated by her history of heavy smoking - she first took up cigarettes at the age of only nine.
