Hello there and a good gardening weekend to all!

There will be an article on Moss coming up soonish,
but in the meantime here are a few lines! Join in if you will.

...............................................................

No Moss? Your Loss!

In the coolth of your garden, and mostly in the shade
You could grow some gentle 'creatures'... and all by Nature made
Dark green, cream green, emerald green, some blue
Slowly find a place in your heart - it's just what they do!

Slow growing, low maintenance and useful in many ways
Moss will make your Bonsais look fine for their displays
And when you need to sit, in serene silence, on your garden chair
See! the Moss Faerie might visit as you could be near her lair.

Now you may ask "Can I grow Moss in a pot?"
Well the short answer to that is a simple "Why not?"
Over flagstones and pavers and 'tween steps moss can wander
Shallow-rooted and easy, it'll make you pause to ponder

on how magical life is ... with a place for all;
The short, the long, the colourful and the tall
Use Sphagnum and Peat, a duo sure to please
In your containers to hang from the branches of trees.
...............................................................

Why not add a verse?

What's next? How about MY GARDEN HAT.

Cheers now

Hi Guys,

Well before we tackle the garden hat I found this original Ogden Nash ...

BUGS

Some insects feed on rosebuds,
And others feed on carrion.
Between them they devour the earth.
Bugs are totalitarian.

Cheers now

Hello one and all,

...............................................................
Ode to Milly

It's floppy, a tad torn, but she's my favourite garden hat,
I've had her for years ... now what do you think about that?
She really works hard, seen me thorough rain and through shine
She has grown with me for sure, that favoured hat of mine.

She cream coloured and blue-ribboned, and she's made of straw
Plants smile when they see her coming to of water give them more
In the kitchen she hangs near the back door on a hook
And right next door to her is my journal, my treasured book

Of garden notes and ideas, of things done wrong and done right
where they're put back of course when gardening turns to night
Do I wear her all the time when out and about I hear you ask?
Well of course, for as old as she is she's still up to the task.

Do you have a garden hat? does she have a name? I call mine Milly
What? you don't and you think that naming a hat is silly?
Well to that I'd say 'If garden hats could speak,
then all my black thumb secrets Milly might leak!'

But no, we talked of this you see, and Milly's promised to keep
her mouth shut when it comes to idle chat, there's not a peep
From her, even though when I go to the weekly garden club meet
she flops even floppier for she knows when she's beat

See Milly's not smart enough, and her place is taken by another
New, with a brimful of pretty flowers, it belonged to my mother
Now Pat as a hat is much smarter of course and worn when on show
When I go to the lessons and lectures by people in the know.

BUT Milly remains and will always be my favourite garden hat,
She knows this I know ... so what do you think about that?

...............................................................

Cheers now ... Next? How about ORCHIDS

Hello Everyone,

Gee how time has flown past, and the orchids have been waiting their turn for a treatment so patiently! Well here is a little poetry fertiliser for them, why not add your own verses, or change the subject if you want to.

...............................................................

Orchidelirium

They say an orchid is just like a spoilt girl,
Has strength, flexibility and will give it a whirl
A shower of sun in the steps of her blooms
A Phalaenopsis in white to brighten our rooms.

Oncidiums, Cymbidiums, Vandas and Dens - oh oh my
You just fall in love with them, who can say why,
There are thousands of hybrids, such beauty, such grace
There'll certainly be one to suit any place.

Pray tell what kind of orchid have you grown before?
Their mystery I think just makes you want more
of the epiphytic ease they have of growing just right,
these with air roots and misting and cool temps at night

Now we call Paphiopedilums and Cymbidiums terrestrial you see
They need some soil and rotting leaves and humus to be
in line for a buyer or a growers indoor outdoor choices
And as members of society are certainly Rolls Royces.

And a word not last, not least, about a girl wild at heart
The Southern African Disa most certainly plays her part
in capturing a orchid aficionado's focus and attention
For this lovely has lots to show that I can here mention

Orchids - do we all like them? You bet we should and we do
There's plenty of charm and love in them there for you too
So buy one, get one and learn about these fascinating plants
Because caring for them is mostly do's, and not many can'ts!

..............................................................

Okay so what is next? Your choice of course but if you are not sure what about SCARECROWS?

Cheers now

Hello one and all and to the crows that need to be scared away!

ScaREcrow

Oh don't be such as scarecrow my brother used to say
How do you hope to make friends if you chase them all away
I suppose I should have listened then; I should have smiled instead
But then I wasn't on guard you see, or protecting what I said

But they could not have known that then or indeed just how shy
A scarecrow is, for then they never asked or knew how or why
the job of a scarecrow is actually a lonely one
Hanging around all day under the long hot sun

I guess the saddest thing that a scarecrow has to bear
Is that more often than not nobody knows it's there
And as the corn grows and it's all for the birds
That fixed straw smile is really too sad for words!

...............................................................

Have a go, add another verse to ScaREcrow, or what about something on FLOWER NAMES FOR GIRLS?

Cheers now

Hello there,

I came across this original Ogden Nash on the Caterpillar and thought I would sneak it in before the Girl's names subject - enjoy!
...............................................................

The Caterpillar

The Caterpillar, as it's called,
Is often hairy, seldom bald;
It looks as if it never shaves;
When as it walks, it walks in waves;
And from the cradle to the chrysalis,
It's utterly speechless, songless, whistleless.
...............................................................

Cheers now - add your own verse to Caterpillar or go for flower names, join in!

Hello All,

Phew! There are so many names a person could use and so many pretty and strong and meaningful ones at that.

I am not sure that Ogden Nash would have approached this in quite the same way - but still, I had fun thinking about it.

Flower Names
...............................................................

Girls and flowers seem synonymous don’t you think?
I mean if you got any bloom then I can say in a blink
You’d put them in water, there to scent and enjoy
With good thoughts for he who gave them … clever boy!

So if a transient bowl of blooms give so much pleasure
Imagine if your name was a bloom, now there’s treasure
For there are flowers and plants and other things green
After which we are called … all fit for a queen.

There’s Daisy and Violet and Fern and Rose
I’d not mind being called any one of those
Or what about Lily or Saffron even Fleur might do
Or what about Angelica or Myrtle, they might suit you too

I knew a Blossom once – a unisex name I am told
A generic flower name perhaps, not like Marigold
Or Primrose or Rosemary, those other Rosy names we know
And there’s Rosalind or Rosemond, yet other ways to go

There could be Poppy, or Flora or Marguerite or Bryony
Acacia and Jasmine or Petal and Aster, even Zinnia or Ivy
Zahara has pizzazz, Leilani is gentle, Daffodil? I’m not so sure
Still, for silly names like Apricot or Apple it may be a cure

Do you know a Delphine, a Heather, an Iris or a Pansy?
Or maybe you’ve met a Camellia, a Peony or a Tansy?
What of ‘the lady of the house’ Hyacinth or Lanthe or Zinnia
Might you have a friend called Calla, or Ash or Petunia?

There are so many more names a person could choose
And named after flowers and trees and plants, who’d lose?
There are girls names and boys names and from many to pick
But really loving and living your name is the trick.
...............................................................

Add to Flower names, OR write your own verse OR why not try something on PERRENIALS

Cheers now

Hi there xmeecosmic and all,

Thanks for stopping by and adding your lines - pretty close to Ogden Nash for sure.

Second verse ... similar to the first!

For thosey who do opposey our rosey,
All blooms in my posey are mine by my chosey
So mosey on down to meet Lilly the Silly,
or Oopsie the Daisy for a bunch willy nillie.

Cheers now

There once was an ardent gardener named Lestie whose plantings were ultra zesty with many considering them the very besty. In fact, the only time Lestie was ever testy was when people did not give a fig for her fig as that she could never dig.
