Feh! That said -- and far be it from Answer Fella to judge a fellow harshly simply for eating hermaphroditic, mucus-secreting vermin -- fire up your oven. The common garden snail found here in the U.S. -- Helix aspersa, the European brown snail -- is among those served in gay Paree, and also in the typical uppity-goy American joint.

Note well, however, that you can’t just snatch ‘em up and scarf ‘em down. Snail hunter and escargot chef Victor Yool says you must first “put them through at least a two-week purging cycle, because there’s no telling what they ate” -- insecticide, for example, or a plant like foxglove, which is toxic to human beings, though not to the French. Yool maintains his snails in a plastic bin, feeds them cornmeal and water, and waits for them to poop out whatever they’ve ingested prior to their capture.

When they’re good to go, Yool boils his snails for ten to fifteen minutes. “This forms an incredibly disgusting scum that you must keep cleaning off,” he says. “When the scum is gone, you know the snails are okay.” He then takes them from their shells; dices the meat finely; adds butter, olive oil, garlic, and parsley; restuffs the shells; and bakes “until they’re bubbling -- at most fifteen minutes. Or you can put them into puff pastry and avoid the shell altogether.”

Yool recommends serving them with a white wine or a mellow red, and, of course, a plain brown vomit bag."

Lovely Lemons

What would a pie be like without a topping of meringue
And without any lemon, well there'd just be no bang,
That spring zing of taste, a tad sour a tad tart
With multiple uses to warm anybody's heart!


Next: Add a verse to Lovely Lemons or go CONTAINERS

Well, well, how interesting. The care and feeding of snails. And then feeding off snails. Couldn't see myself going through all this preparation, but I did often eat them in France.

Hi Mona and thanks - we could write an Ode I guess, Lemons are just too marvellous for words. But then so is all gardening I say. Maybe I will carry on the lemon saga another time but for now here is

It's a Pot I've Got

Containers come in all shapes and sizes; plastic and ceramic too
Choose your pots carefully ask yourself, “what are they going to do?”
Then clean them, line them, saucer them or place them in the sun
And plant them up with flowers, veggies and herbs - enough for everyone!

So go for another verse for Containers or try TOPIARY

Oh dear I posted the same message twice - so in editing it I have moved on ... too quickly I fear but no harm really done!

Scissor-happy Blues

Oh Topiary Mopiary me
When I started out I thought I had a tree
But after cutting around I find
That maybe it’s just not kind

To trim a shrub, aye there’s the rub
And it’s enough to send me to the pub
To grieve the cuts and drown my sorrows
While I contemplate my container tomorrows

But a with a small smidgeon of thought
I find I can do what I ought
To save my changed herby bush,
The thing is to take my time, and not rush.

So if it is a lollipop, a round or a square
What’s more important is that I am there
To ensure a good shape and a neat one too
I think it looks great – don’t you?


As usual, add something to topiary or go for SOIL

Hi People, hope you are not all chocolated out! Anyway, I think we have to come up with other reasons to receive red roses and chocolates. What do you think?

In the meantime, here is a bit of 'verse' on soil.

Chocolate for Earthworms

Now when it comes to the importance of SOIL
The correct choice, the right one is worth all the toil
the boil, the bubble and the trouble! It’s all in the mix you see
The plants, any kind, settle down, grow, and show easily

That they really like the feel of the loose loam
And while their roots spread out in their new home
The leaves and flowers stretch up up and away
Ready to do their thing and produce for another day.

Now the addition of sand and compost and perlite
Sees top results which also just might
Harvest more and more as the plants share their bounty
With so much fruit or seeds or beauty, one loses county

Still the time and effort I spend in the garden gives such pleasure
That at the day’s end, with my feet on my table of leisure
I pick some fresh herbs for green tea ... Oh happy happy goil
As I smile and patiently wait for my kettle to boil!

Okay, next is something more tricky? Try some more on any subject that has been written about - either add on
OR write another OR try TRIFFIDS

Hi there ... speaking of earthworm chocolate I am reminded of this short bit of verse by Dorothy Parker that I thought I would remind you of again -

No Squirms Worms

“It costs me never to stab or squirm
To come by chance across a worm

Hello there,

Well I think that Trifids is too difficult right now, so let's leave them alone for a bit until the imagination gets going into the realms of fantasy again.

So what about Ground Covers?

Lovers of these Covers...

Soft and green and fresh and kind,
spreadingly scented ground covers, you'll find
Are a pleasure to grow, by themselves or 'tween stones
A great place of rest for a gardener's weary bones!

There are all sorts and shapes and in fact so many
But my favourite has to be my dear creeping Jenny
But there's mint and grasses and pennywort too
that give up their spring and scent from under my shoe

Now why grow them I hear a somebody ask
For many reasons I answer, it's such a small task
To prepare a shady pot or a patch of tree ground
Such pleasure they offer is what I have found.

Next: Lillies - join in - it's fun!

Do you grow lillies? They are such easy contestants for your container garden. If you have the pots, three in a row would really look great!

Gilded Lillies?

Lillies, oh so many, are amazing and gracefully fine
It's difficult to choose which one for any garden of mine
Majestic, colourful and fragrant too
In pots they're beautiful! Please grow some - do.

Now which would you say was your all-time favourite?
Zantedeschia, those Arums, well they have to be a hit
But for me, if I truly really and must absolutely say
It has to be my Aggies, they're for me any day!
