The recent news of a Florida sinkhole that has swallowed a man and caused the evacuation of 2 surrounding homes has me thinking about emergency preparedness. The 2 families that had to evacuate only had 20 to 30 minutes to grab possessions from their homes.

So I wondered what I would grab in a hurry. Obviously, my first concern would be my cats. After that, it became a toss up between sentimental items like photos, necessary items like meds, and important info like bank account info and important papers.

These last items are the kinds of things that can be replaced but are a real hassle to replace. Plus, being able to have your financial information handy in an emergency can be a real comfort and make life a little easier.

Of course, with only 20 minutes, I probably would spend most of that time getting my cats in their carriers. So I'm planning to get copies of this financial information in a safe place outside the home, like a safe deposit box. At the very least, it would be good to put it on a zip file or portable hard drive, so I could just quickly grab that in an emergency.

So what about you? Do you have your finances easy to grab? Would this even cross your mind in an emergency? What would you grab?

I do not have any pets and kids so I do not have to worry about that. I would grab my four favorite teddy bears (technically its 1 teddy bear, 1 cabbage patch doll, 1 duck and 1 Elmo), my Dallas Stars Eric Lindros authentic jersey and what I could from my Michael Schumacher collection. If I had more time I would also take the score of the last three Batman and all my Rammstein albums (these i could replace easily so that would only be if i had the time...some if not most of my Shumi collection are items that are not available anymore).

Nancy,

Thank you for sharing. I, too, have a favorite teddy bear. It is amazing how you really begin to focus on your favorite possessions when considering an emergency.

Loong,

Thank you for your perspective. It reminds me that the most important thing in life is life.

One thing I didn't think of when writing this post was all my BellaOnline writing. I think that I would want to have copies of all my work and writing.

I wonder what my fellow BellaOnline Editors feel about this?

At least the BellaOnline work could be retrieved from the website.

I would grab my pets, my jewelry, my computer, my photos, and my important papers. If I have time I would also grab my books.

Good point Debbie. It's nice to know we already have a backup for our work.
