Edie,
I watched quite a few of the CM episodes. Like you, I liked the characters. But the I realized how very sadistic the stories were. It was a kind of pornography of violence and evil. I stopped watching. Bit by bit I have noticed that the other shows--csi ny and even the original csi set in las Vegas have become almost as sadistic. I've stopped watching them as well.

There comes a time when we need to draw the line as to what is acceptable to us. My tastes have changed over the years, but so have what is allowed on TV. Certainly not the shows I watched in the sixties and later. It's too bad that shows we used to like we can no longer watch because they have gotten more violent. So sad.

I've just watched the two Robert Downey, Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies. They too take an unusual twist on the Doyle characters, but--unlike the CBS rubbish--they retain the spirit of the originals.

I understand, Maeve. Not all updated movies or TV shows are worth watching. If someone is going to take on such a popular and well-defined character such as Sherlock Holmes, they better get it right.

Thanks for letting us know your take on the two different versions. There definitely are two schools of thought as to whether they succeeded or not.
