Thick yogurt can also be added to curries in place of cream to lighten up dishes & add a bit of tangy-ness. It also helps to mellow out the spices, just add a dollop to your curry (after it has cooled down for about 10-15 minutes, otherwise the heat curdles the yogurt).

I also add it to non-lettuce based salads such as chopped tomatoes & red onions or chopped tomatoes & cucumbers.

You can even add a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg, ground allspice, ground cardamom powder & saffron to thick yogurt -- serve with fresh fruit or berries for a healthy dessert :-)

A great suggestion, Sadhana. If I remember correctly, creme fraiche can also be used to reduce the intensity of a curry. I have seen this done with chilli on occasions.

I love the sound of the dessert, will have to give that a try smile

Hello Clare,

Yes, creme fraiche also works but yogurt is a healthier option & also, creme fraiche is not easily available everywhere.

The dessert is known as Shrikhand.

A quick shortcut is to use Greek yoghurt, instead of straining the yoghurt.

Thanks,
