Folks we are look for an answer to the question at the beginning of this string.

It is amazing how long the hedgehog has been around. Just too many animals from North American have become extinct including many bird/parrot species - SAD

The baby finch is clumsily flying onto the cage branches and perches, but still nesting on the floor of the cage (although there are three nests in the cage). There is coloration on the tail feathers and white showing up underneath, and I think I spot the beginnings of orgnge cheek patches, which would indicate that the baby is a male. He has mainly stopped the chorus howling, which is an indication that he is feeding on his own. As soon as his colors come in and he is fully self sufficient, I am going to move him into the cage with the single formerly-abused female and see how that works out. Best wishes, Z. G. Sounds like your baby is growing up fast. I'd love to see a picture of him. You have my private email still right? I changed computers so I don't have a zillion email addresses anymore. I need to get everyone together again. Let me know if moving the kid in with the formerly-abused female works out.

I thought so. He died today - fell over and died. Over the last two days he was looking a little ragged. I have learned that the two most crucial periods for baby finches are (1) the time when they venture from the nest and fall to the ground and (2) when they try to go to feeding themselves rather than demanding food from their parents. But, these parents have proven they can deliver babies and one other pair have also produced a baby, although not making it very far. Hope springs eternal. So we will see and try to make the environment as baby-friendly as possible.

I am so sorry to hear about your little finch. Since they are proven parents hopefully it won't happen again (often the first produced young have problems the parents learn). It is hard to lose an animal especially the very young.

I had such hopes for the little fellow. As far as I could see his parents were being diligent. Perhaps there is hope for some new youngsters in the future. The only egg in the nest was expelled last week and there are no eggs in any of the three nests housing female and male pairs (yet). I will keep you all posted if there are changes. After all, there have been many finches born here that have lived long lives. And, Winston, Jr., is still here nearing ten years of age and is still the most melodic basso profundo singer, from which the other two males have taken singing lessons. Best wishes, Z. G.
