An ancient Greek tale of pride and passion is played out across the sky, involving five constellations including Cepheus the king. In Cepheus there are stars being born and stars at the end of their lives, including those which will die in a blaze of glory.

Mona, this is a fantastic article and the images you chose are wonderful.

I am getting more and more into the relations between ancient mythology and the constellations. I am going to have fun reading more of your articles related to this.

Awesome work! smile

Here is the Elephant's Trunk Nebula in the constellation Cepheus. Cepheus the king was the husband of Cassiopeia and father of Andromeda (represented by their own constellations).
Quote:
The dusty Elephant's Trunk Nebula winds through the emission nebula and young star cluster complex IC 1396, in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus. Also known as vdB 142, the cosmic elephant's trunk is over 20 light-years long. The colorful view highlights bright, swept-back ridges that outline the region's pockets of cool interstellar dust and gas. Such embedded, dark, tendril-shaped clouds contain the raw material for star formation and hide protostars within. Nearly 3,000 light-years distant, the relatively faint IC 1396 complex covers a large region on the sky, spanning over 5 degrees.

Hot, young stars and cosmic pillars of gas and dust seem to crowd into NGC 7822. At the edge of a giant molecular cloud in Cepheus, the glowing star-forming region is about 3,000 light-years away. Within the nebula, bright edges and dark shapes stand out. The image includes data from narrowband filters, mapping emission from atomic oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur into blue, green, and red hues. The emission line and color combination has become well-known as the Hubble palette. The atomic emission is powered by energetic radiation from the central hot stars. This field of view spans over 40 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 7822.
