Disco vs. rap! Disco was viciously attacked by the music press and still is. Why? Disco produced classic anthems like "YMCA, I Will Survive and, yes, Dancing Queen." Disco was positive, romantic and sexy. Acts like Donna Summer, Chic and Barry White made great records. Even ABBA and The Bee Gees had one foot in disco. Yet, disco has been vilified, demonized and crucified.

On the other hand, the music press has given rap free rein. Rap is the filthiest, most vulgar "art form" this side of hard-core porn. Why does it go unchallenged? I have never understood it, why disco is so maligned while rap gets away with "mf this and mf that." Can anyone explain it?

Perhaps you have missed the paeans to Donna Summer and Robin Gibb and their music that have been ubiquitous in the press since these artists recent passings.

I definitely prefer disco if I had to choose though classic rock, pop, and hard rock is my fave.

Neither - I'd rather enjoy pure silence (or at least the ringing in my damaged ears). Can't claim the acoustic trauma came from loud music, but those 70's ROCK concerts probably didn't help.

I'd say it depends on the neighborhood you're in and what type of disco versus what type of rap is under question. There is plenty of music these days that people call rap, which in reality is actually hip hop.

I'm neither a disco nor rap fan. I wouldn't say that music deterioration is happening only in the rap genre. I would say just about all music in the pop/soul/rap/disco...whatever genre, has gone completely downhill.

Music isn't about love or having fun anymore. It's all about sex - period. Turn on top 40 or whatever.

So my problem is with music overall, not just rap...

Disco was dance music and that's still around and bigger then ever and definitely bigger than rap ever was or will be. Calvin Harris is my favorite dance music artist right now. He always has multiple hits on the charts including one I can't stop playing right now called Acceptable In The 80's from his album I Created Disco.

Believe it or not there are some highly evolved rappers who don't resort to degrading vulgar lyrics. Mos Def raps about water conservation and mathematics.

Tricky is probably one of the most sophisticated rappers ever blending rock, hip hop, alternative, jazz, and blues into intelligent hypnotic tracks that are timeless vs. dated like most rap.

Check out Hell Is Around The Corner by Tricky. The sound will surprise you. His 2010 album Mixed Races is awesome. Sadly there aren't many rappers like these 2.
