Along with the rest of the world, India has been observing March 8th as International Women�s Day for the past few years. History however shows the poor status of Indian women and several horrendous practices, many still shamelessly upheld. Read on to see what Women�s Day has come to be in India.

Your article is really thought provoking Preena.

Life really does not seem to have moved with the times for many Indian women................nothing at all like a Bollywood movie.

What lies behind it? Is it based on religion, boys being brought up as 'macho', or simply that from birth for some of India's people girls are just not considered equal?

Thanks Francine. There are a whole lot of reasons for the poor status of Indian women. Poverty, lack of education and abuse are some of the reasons. Boys here are made to believe they are not just macho but are gods of the house. That makes girls believe they are inferior. Many women in rural India find it so easy to accept this too.

Things have changed though. But there women still struggle for their rights.
