I've seen mourning dove and rock dove (pigeons) all my years in my area, but this week a new one is in the yard. I've looked everywhere for and i.d. but can't figure out what it is. The dove is the same shape and size of a mourning but the color! The head and neck is brown and the back parts..tail and wing tips are black. Does anyone know what this bird is called?

Where are you physically located, what state or country? There are indeed reddish/brown rock doves that are on the rare side but exist. Usually their wing ends are white but as you know birds can end up with all sorts of color combinations depending on who their parents were. There's also a spotted dove that is brown with dark ends but that is mostly found in southern California ...
