It might seem strange but a Potato Salad is probably the most popular Christmas Eve meal in Germany.

Heiligabend, 24th December, used to be the last day of a fast which had started after St. Marten's, November 11, and a dish like this was one of those traditionally served.

Although the fast is no longer kept the custom of having a large bowl of potato salad for the Christmas Eve meal, often accompanied by sausages of one type or another, has remained.

Francine, I tried your recipe for Hot German Potato Salad a while back when you gave it to me and my family love it! I am going to make some for our Christmas Eve supper and serve it with sausages (haven't decided which kind yet).

Wonderful article and I like your vegetarian variations. The apples and pickles sound really good.

Hi Phyllis, Did you get around to having your Potato Salad on Christmas Eve?

Was just wondering as I will be beginning to prepare one for the New Years Eve meal soon.it is a tradition in Germany and good luck symbol when it accompanies a piece of Lucky Pig in one form or another.

Well it is not lucky for the pig actually, and just thinking about it has put me off the idea, will have the potato salad with something else and stick to a chocolate pig.

I've just noticed the hot potato salad. It sounds yummy, so I've taken down the recipe. Have even found a Potato Council site that advises on the right sorts of potatoes for different uses. Here's a link for people in the UK: UK Potato Varieties But I guess there must be sites for other regions too.

Not sure when I'll get around to trying this, but will report back.

Happy New Year.

Hi Francine. Happy New Year!

I did not make the salad on Christmas Eve. My brother did the whole supper party himself and it was wonderful!!!

I am so hungry though for your salad again, so I will try to get some made next week.

Blessings to you.
