Connie thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the article. I have found I have most enjoyed writing articles whcih draw on my experience (even though I will often double check my views/ideas/recollections through research).

Deanna the key date for Hogmanay is the night of 31 December - 1 January. Yet celebrations over the season will often stretch longer (for instance Edinburgh advertised its 2011-12 Hogmanay celebrations from 30 December 2011 - 1 January 2012). This year due to New Year's Day falling on a Sunday even England has had the day off on Monday as a bank holiday, thought everything looks set to go again tomorrow...

Yes Christmas is celebrated more in Scotland now, but my sense has been that this has partly been imported from England, partly riding on the back of materialistic culture, and that Hogmanay and Christmas can still stride hand in hand with in Scotland with their heads held high viking

It just all seems like such a nice and exciting time with the tradition of the "First Footer" and all.

Deanna the easiest way to think of it is HOG - MUH = NAY - the "a" in the middle is very soft, more like a light "u" sound, and the "ay" at the end is hard (so the "nay" sounds more like the horse's noise "neigh").
