That's the difference between teaching as a homeschooling parent and teaching in the public sector. As a public sector teacher, I wrote a Sprint Grant in excess of $7000 to teach kids to cook and clean up after themselves. Not only did they learn cooking skills, they learned math, reading, working in a group, cooperating to take on large projects. We never left a mess, and we never had bugs. This year, I can't have ANY food in my classroom. I have the math/science club and we can't do M & M math, cooking with fractions, or a host of other worthy activities.
When I homeschooled, the boys learned how to cook. In addition to smaller meals and snacks, each of them made two complete turkey dinners. That involved planning, following directions, and timing. At the time, the boys were in 5th and 9th grades.
I love brownie math, and I am just bitter that I can't teach that way!
