In the 18th and 19th centuries Flammkuchen was a lunchtime meal known only to those living in Alsace, which has been a part of both Germany and France in the last centuries, and who either had bread ovens or knew someone who did.

Now this 'Pizza, Alsatian-style' is a firm favourite with Germans and travellers alike.

Okay! This looks like something I'd grab as I waltz past a vendor at the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt at the end of this month.

Might get cold... but then cold pizza was always good for breakfast after a Friday night during college.

Phyllis you are so welcome, it is such fun for me, and if you do try the Flammkuchen I hope you enjoy it, please let me know how it went.

It is what we call more-ish, does that make sense over there? Once one starts eating it it is hard to stop..at least that is what I find happens. blush

Yes Flammkuchen really is one of those dont miss things if you are in Germany Beetlemess, and with the atmosphere of the Christkindlesmarkt it will probably taste even better.

Nuremberg is known as Germanys No.1 Christmas City, and it has a lovely, and huge, Christmas market, have enjoyed it whenever I have been. Like the majority of German Weihnachtsmaerkte it deliberately restricts itself to traditional Christmas goodies which really adds to the spirit of the season somehow.

However if you have the time, as you will already be in the area, do try and fit in a visit to the Munichs Marienplatz Christkindlesmarkt, in the medieval heart of the city. It is just beautiful, the setting and music featured so atmospheric, and quite different from Nuremberg. Smaller, cosier, the food on offer is thought of as amongst the best in Germany and, although it also attracts millions of visitors, it is less expensive.

Then just a few meters away there is also a Kripperlmarkt, Nativity Market, where everything on offer is concentrated around The Nativity, also something really worth seeing. Just in case you cant make it am sending you over a link, which will give you at least a feel of what it is like. And as you can see Lederhosen are not only a little unsuitable for climbing snowy mountains, they are also really not a good idea when visiting Christmas Markets. smile

Munich's Christkindlmarkt and Kripperlmarkt

Am sure you will enjoy your trip Beetlemess. Bavaria is beautiful at any time of the year, but at Christmas.....well then it is even more special.

Being a Denver Native transplanted to Washington, DC, I long for mountains that have a timberline and jutting rocky crags. Don't find many of those in this section of the Appalachians. I'm looking forward to a possible trip to the top of the Zupspitze - in fact, I'll do it solo if the wife whimps out because of any weather. But that means extra luggage room being used for a personal accomplishment... aww, what the heck - Just Do IT!

There you go Beetlemess, this is what awaits you.

Zugspitze Roundtrip - The total mountain experience

Have made the ascent to the summit so many times and, no matter what time of year, it is not something of which one can ever become tired.

Unless you are thinking of trying to actually climb shocked the Zugspitze, or ski down it, you won't need extra luggage, just normal winter clothes which will be necessary anyhow, and you will probably be able to have a warming slice of Flammkuchen in the caf at the summit, which is a beer garden surrounded by snow and with faboulous views in the summer.
