Prior to European contact, the Powhatan Confederation of tribes occupied land in what is now eastern Virginia. An estimated 14,000 to 21,000 people were members of these tribes.

Guess my line of the Piscataway, Pamunkey & Mattaponi Tribes in Jane's forum not being federally-recognized sparked a research. There is always a big event when the Pamunkey chief presents a tribute of slain deer, turkey, pottery, etc. to the Governor of Virginia as part of their having the reservation and the 1646 treaty.

Yes, it did motivate me to do more research on early history in Appalachia. I love researching history and your mention of the Pamunkey lead me in that direction. I should thank you for that, Beetle. Thank you!

With Jamestown becoming the first settlement, I thought that would be a good place to start. There is so much history there to discover.

PS: with all that history in Virginia with the Powhatan Confederacy, why do you suppose those tribes are not federally recognized? They were a major part of early American history.

My next article on history will go in to the Bacon Rebellion of 1676.

You had me thinking & I decided to see if I could find that answer. Doesn't seem to jump out of the text I viewed on the internet, but there does seem to be connections to the tribes being recognized by Colonial Virginia & poor documentation retention.

Did stumble across a 50-page document that seems to be a study guide for students in Virginia to prepare for their Standards of Learning exams on Virginia history. I'll link it in here: Beyond Jamestown

Good info & food for thought - need to check out the very last page...

My gosh, Beetle -- this is great information you point me to. I bookmarked the site so I can study it tonight. Thank you so much! This will greatly help with my series of history of the Appalachian peoples.

I am very glad to find out there is work in progress to have the tribes federally recognized. That is wonderful.

I began another history article last night, going into the Bacon Rebellion of 1676.

Well...according to some, I guess. I meant to say "Bacon's Rebellion". I somehow just knew that after I posted that it would sound funny. You sure know how to make me laugh!
