This year the NAMMY's (Native American Music Awards) have opened categories for the public to vote on a winner.

Log in to their website. There is a list of all the categories and nominees on the Home Page. Over 30 categories are open for public voting. There are links to each performance for you to enjoy and select your favorite. Click on VOTE NOW for the on-line ballot.

It will take some time to make your way through all the categories. However, this is a great way to sample the variety of music by American Indian Artists. You are sure to find some new favorites!

The Awards show will be broadcast on the website above. Mark your calendars for Friday, October 7th 8pm EST. Browsing through the names of nominees who will be attending, I saw Terry Lee Whetstone. He designed a blanket for Pendleton a few years back.

Hate to be that person (tho I usually am =\) they had voting on awards last year too. <3

Wendy, Thanks for the correction! I've know about NAMA for a while, but had not looked into their awards until this year.

I'm not certain how I would feel if nominated for a category open for public voting (not that I ever would be). It might feel more like a popularity contest, than a measure of artistic achievement. Not "knocking" popularity, that brings in sales. Maybe the recognition and publicity are the best aspects.

I wonder how those nominated view public voting?

The winners are posted on the website. Black Thunder Singers were awarded the best Pow-Wow recording. Harvey Arden and Leonard Peltier won in the category of Best Spoken Word Recording for My Life is My Sundance.
