I'm getting ravenously hungry reading through the ABC Sandwich Ingredients Game and thought I'd steal the idea.

Let's get an ABC Cocktails Ingredients Game started. I'll supply A, B, and C but I'm looking forward to y'all to take it over from there, OK?

A - amaretto
B - bourbon
C - club soda

Who's next?

LOL Sandy, I wish I was a drinker. Now my boyfriend does and would do well with this game.

Now I could cheat and use the internet to look up stuff, but I won't.

When I was the editor for the "Walking Site" before resigning and now Elizabeth is doing an AWESOME job with the site - Beetle & Rosie played that game there (Word Association) and still do.

I do stop by when I can as a "regular" poster to play with them.

Maybe they might be able to help you out with this game.

In fact, let me head over there now and post a request to see if they are interested.

Talk soon wink

Love the OJ!

Especially love laughing!

OJ has lots of vitamin C and I believe that I will be consuming a little with the mimosas on Thanksgiving Morn!

I remember an episode from my life in Jersey...

We - my sister and I -- were talking about something, and drinking OJ over breakfast and we started laughing so hard that the OJ came out of my sister's nose!!!

She said it burned, and I say she talks too much!!

A - Absinthe

Aka The Green Goddess - pretty strong stuff.

This post may reflect the historian in me, as Victorian Bohemians knocked it back and often wrote 'under the influence'.

"What is there in absinthe that makes it a separate cult? ... Even in ruin and in degradation it remains a thing
apart: its victims wear a ghastly aureole all their own, and in their peculiar hell yet gloat with a sinister perversion
of pride that they are not as other men." -- Aleister Crowley

Now whether this would be used nowadays in any cocktail I couldn't say.....Sandy? sick

Absinthe is becoming popular again, here in the US anyway. It was prohibited here for many years but it's been allowed back on the market in the last year or so. One of the most popular brands is called Lucid - perfect name, I think, for a beverage once known for causing hallucinations. I think the stuff sold these days doesn't have the same amount of wormwood as the earlier versions so it's not what Mr. Crowley enjoyed.

Vincent Van Gogh, one of my favorite people of all time, was closely associated with absinthe, too. Maybe that's where his inspiration for all those beautifully vibrant colors came from.

Ah....fascinating.

There is also a theory that he suffered from migraines, and that the hyperreal vibrancy of his colours reflected the way he saw the world through the 'aura' of classic migraine. Mind you, I imagine wormwood would give anyone a migraine! (Whatever it is).

But then Van Gogh and theories...it is now strongly contended that he was shot by a teenage boy with a cowboy complex, and did not commit suicide at all.

Oh and back to the game -

B - Bourbon

C - Champagne! That's a great cocktail ingredient.

Hadn't heard the cowboy theory - is that real or are you teasing me? I was just getting my head into "Lust for Life," a historical/fictional account of his life (by Irving Stone - love him!) when that crazy fire broke out and broke my ability to concentrate on just about everything. Haven't really been able yet to settle back down to a novel-sized reading project but the mind will be back soon. I feel it making appearances every now and again. laugh

Yes Sandy - a new biog of Van Gogh, came out early this month I think. There was a boy - 16 or so - who apparently had a wild west complex. He followed Vincent around, put chilli powder in his tea, teased him - and it seems he carried a gun around and aimed it at people.

When Van Gogh got home, fatally wounded, he said something like 'It was no one else's fault, it was what I wanted to happen' or something. They (the authors) say he was protecting the boy.

No, not a joke - I'll look it up for you and post back.

OK - here's the link to BBC news -
Did Van Gogh really kill himself?

Well I'm not really a Scotch 'whisky' kinda girl, Kass, as I'm second generation Irish, and therefore only like to drink whiskey.

Which neatly brings us to...

J - Jameson smile

(Irish and Scottish whiskeys have different spellings by the way - Scottish = whisky, Irish = whiskey).

And I didn't guess....oh go on then, I did, but i was trying to prolong the intrigue cool

btw Irish spelling of 'whiskey', please!

Actually the roots of Scottish and Irish dialects are very similar and both come from Gaelic languages, so the whole 'is there an 'e' or not in whiskey?' is a bit of a red herring I suppose, so I'm being silly. But it's like Manchester United v Manchester City - you know which you like, right? (Well that is if you care one way or the other).

Oh and this is all just a preamble, because N !!!

Hmm... I don't suppose we can have nibbles, can we?

N - Nibbles smile

What is a martini without...

O - olives

Yeah, speaking as a linguist who has studied the Gaelic languages, the whole "ey" versus "y" thing is really arbitrary. Neither nationality spells the word with a "y" at all in their native language. And over here in the States, the "y" spelling is neither Irish nor Scots but rather the "archaic" spelling of the word. We had this little thing called "The Whisky Rebellion" in 1794 and that's the only time that it's proper in American English to skip the "e". Our bottles of Jameson even say "whiskey".

Heh. I just said "proper" and "American English" in the same sentence. LOL!

No, black and tan is not a "mixed drink", unless you think of a Bud as a "drink", its a mixed beer. However a Velvet Glove is Guiness and Champagne (brrr!) - that's a mixed drink.

Nor do I think "nibbles" is a cocktail ingredient, unless you can say just what "nibbles" you are talking about and what drink they are used in.

You can however garnish a cocktail with a nasturtium flower and what would egg nog and rum be without a sprinkle of nutmeg.

What's up? O?

You can make a Sherry Alexander or a Sherry Flip with Oloroso sherry.

Black and tan is a mixed drink in my book, Frank. I've been bartending since the 70s, poured thousands of beers and mixed bazillions of drinks. Anything that requires more than one liquid ingredient is a cocktail to me! laugh

"Oloroso is a brand name, not an ingredient"

I guess that's why you're cocktails and not wine editor.

Oloroso is not a brand name, it is a type of sherry, a medium sweet sherry in fact, which is called for in the coctails I gave.

If you were to use a fino or amontillad sherry the cocktail would be too dry. Use a cream sherry and it would be too sweet. Specifically, you use oloroso sherry, so just saying sherry would not tell one how to make the drink.

It's like dry vermouth or sweet vermouth. Neither "dry" nor "sweet" are ingredients, but they are vital parts of the name of the ingredient. If you mix gin and sweet vermouth, you haven't got a martini.

Besides, being a brand name should not exclude an ingredient. You can't make a Pimm's Cup without Pimm's.

O = Oops! Frank, I stand corrected. Thank you.

I think you might be quite surprised if I revealed my wine experience here but it's the middle of a very busy work day and I can't dabble in drink at the moment nor do I feel the need to prove myself to you.

Brand names are not included in my cocktails ABC game. The game calls for ingredients, that's why it's called the 'ABC Cocktails Ingredients Game.' In the case of the Pimm's Cup cocktail you mentioned, you simply cannot make it without using Pimm's No. 1 Cup liqueur; there is no substitution. Pimm's is the most important ingredient in the drink.

For a better understanding of my policy on brand names, please read here:

Brand Names, Product Reviews, Endorsements

You're welcome to continue playing the game but please follow the rules without argument. I offered the game for fun, not one-upmanship.

Cheers, y'all! laugh

"You're welcome to continue playing the game but please follow the rules without argument"

As far as I can tell, I did follow the rules; what I "argued" (although I see it more like 'corrected and provided supporting information') was your mischaracterization of oloroso as a "brand name".

"In the case of the Pimm's Cup cocktail you mentioned, you simply cannot make it without using Pimm's No. 1 Cup liqueur; there is no substitution. Pimm's is the most important ingredient in the drink."

That's pretty much what I said in more words. So is Pimm's out as an ingredient or in? 'Cos it is a brand name, but Pimm's Cups Nos. 1 through 6 (or is it 7) are genuinely cocktails. I mean heck, a martini wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Martini and ....

Am stuck with 'Q', would the Quinine in Tonic work, for a Pink Gin and Tonic Cocktail?

Just for interest it is possible to make both a passable Pimms Cup and Classic Cocktail without genuine Pimms No.1 Frank. Have done it masses of times because along with the other two remaining types of Pimms the real McCoy is not often to be found here.

1 oz Plymouth Gin
2/3 oz Sweet Vermouth (Red)
1/3 oz Dry Vermouth (White)
1/4 oz Triple Sec or Cointreau
3 Dash Regan's Orange Bitters

It looks like Pimms, it tastes like Pimm's, and folks who have been drinking the real stuff for years are very surprised to find out that what they are busily polishing off is in fact a Cheater Pimm's. A cocktail of its own perhaps.

AWESOME, I see the game is still going strong. Rumor says Beetle is in Germany, so needless to say the Walking game has slowed down but Francine has been keeping Rosie company until Beetle returns. I stop in once in a while to play or pass when I have no idea - they understand, games are not my strong point at all.

Bye for now...

Ice cold is the way to go Sandy!

We'd often consume a bottle of Rumple Minze on Christmas Eve. Fortified, we would then proceed to run out in the snow barefoot and jump around merrily, screaming and laughing at the same time. What fun.

cool

What a fun holiday tradition! I'm tired of Texas and want to move north. I'll be thinking of you and longing for a white Christmas this year, guaranteed!

Well Francine, I have a Q Question (if that's not tautology!)

Would Quash constitute an ingredient? OK, bear with me here (even as I ask I'm thinking uh uh on many counts). It is an English brand of concentrated orange cordial, and my mum used to drink it with vodka. But then....it's a brand name. Oh and it's not on sale anymore smile

Maybe we should stick with your quinine, Francine

Why thank you, Sandy smile

And Rumple Minze is the most FAB name!! I want to drink it just from the name alone. But erm...what on Earth is it?

It sounds like something Winnie the Pooh would have imbibed, infused with spice and heated up with a hot poker, accompanied with roasted chestnuts. Yum!

Rumple Minze is an interesting liqueur - potent and tasty. I like it icy cold, in the wintertime, and with an ice cold beer chaser. It's a 100 proof peppermint schnapps.

I looked for a link to a RM website but found a broken link. Here's what Wikipedia says about it (I'm a BIG Wikipedia fan):

Rumple Minze

I agree with you. The name is so cool I want to try it!

U - UNDERBERG herbal bitters from Germany

They come in little individual bottles and used to be only taken as a digestive, to chase down all the heavy food perhapshowever it does sneak into cocktails as an ingredient these days. Have tried several and am still alive.

Hello,

Never heard of the Underberg; haven't seen it in the stores stateside.

Those digestive bitters work! I've tried Jagermeister, Schwartzhog and Zwack and once you get past the taste, well, heck, it's not so bad after all if you mix something else in as you say Francine.

Watermelon Liqueur, mixed with Vodka it makes a popular cocktail in Germany known as Watermelon Man

Underburg is quite easily found in the US now Anna, though if one would want to find it now that would be another thing altogether. To say it is something of an acquired taste in its natural form is an understatement, but even Amazon and health food shops stock it nowadays.

Francine, I've seen Underburg in US stores but I wasn't sure what it was. A quick visit to their website leaves me wondering if it's a bitters, like Angostura, that's used mostly as a flavoring or for drinking alone, as maybe Dubonnet or Lillet?

And I don't know why this struck me as funny but I was so amused when you mentioned watermelon liqueur. Here, southerners get teased about our love of watermelon so I always think of it as a regional, Old South, kind of thing. I love it that it's popular in Europe, too. Melons grow everywhere, though, don't they? smile

It is both Sandy. Just like Angostura is added to Gin and Tonic to make a Pink Gin Cocktail, folks do the same with Underburg in all types of drinks.

And it is sold in little 'one serving' bottles to drink neat, after a meal or just because you feel like it. The taste does grow on you after a few.....hundred probably, have not got that far as yet.

And yes water melons are grown all over Europe, and a favourite treat here is slices of them frozen and eaten like a lolly. Yum!

I'm thinking Zinfandel, and hoping it's not been used before

Z - Zinfandel

1 1/2 oz Chambord raspberry liqueur
4 oz Zinfandel white wine
3 splashes 7-Up soda

Mix zinfandel with chambord and add 7-up. Serve on ice.

Well that's what the web tells me, anyway smile

Gosh Eileen, have you forgotten Yummy Yellow Chartreuse.......well if you like things that are bright yellow and very sweet that is, it does however go into a passable cocktail.

Champs Elysees Cocktail

1 oz. Brandy
1/2 oz. Yellow Chartreuse
Juice 1/4 to 1/2 Lemon
1/2 tsp. Powdered Sugar
dash Bitters (There they are again)

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

Now that, with your slice of frozen watermelon, is sure to make your evening go with a Zing.

L - Lambic
Not a brand name but a type of Belgian fruit flavored beer, made with different fruits.

It makes a great Lambic Sangria, which surely qualifies as an almost cocktail at least, with chilled raspberry lambic, pale ale, a little dry white wine, raspberries and thinly sliced orange..........goes amazingly well with frozen water melon Eileen, and with all that fruit it just about qualifies as a healthy salad. smile

Ooh raspberry beer, just divine smile

And fruit beers (the ones I've bought here in the UK, usually French or Belgian) come in lovely. authentic green bottles. I've got some on my kitchen window sill with sprigs of lavender in.

'Ten green bottles.....'

They're very pretty. and talking of frozen melon...

M - Melon

R = Rock and rye liqueur - rye whiskey, rock-candy syrup, and fruit juices. Some brands have rock candy suspended in the bottle, others have fruit slices. Great for making soothing hot drinks when, baby, it's cold outside!
