Remember ABBA??

In the last few years they were offered millions of dollars to tour again - they said "no thanks." LOL!! Guess they've had enough of touring!

One of my fave songs by them was "Girl with the Golden Hair." I also loved "Take a Change," and "Does Your Mother Know?"

How about you? What was your favorite ABBA song?

I've never forgotten ABBA - they're my favorite band ever - I was brought up listning to them. I have way too many favorite songs of there's, but I love ' The Winner Takes It All', 'One Of Us', 'The Day Before You Came' and 'Thank-You For the Music.'

I listen to them all the time and love Agnetha - one of the most beautiful girls in the pop world ever, with a fantastic voice smile She was the main reason they stopped touring & can't tour or ever would again - she's terrified of travelling, she's been in a plane crash and two bus crashes on the road touring (she lost a child in one if I remember correctly.) She's lovely though smile Better to remember them all as they were I think too smile

Oh Steven, I had no idea!!! Poor Agnetha. I think that would sour me on touring too!!!

"Thank you for the music" that's the one I was thinking of!!!

"I'm a Marionette" was another one of my faves. I used to listen to Abba - The Album over and over and over!

So was Agnetha the blonde one? Didn't the dark haired gal do a solo album?

I was so happy to see the movie "Mama Mia" and hear all their great songs.

Super Trooper is another favorite!!! I haven't heard it nearly as often as the others, but I LOVE it.

Also, everytime I perform "Fernando," I always get the best reaction from the audience laugh Even the younger folks love it!

Yeah, Agnetha's the blonde, Anna Fried (Frieda) is the brunette. They've both done solo albums. I remember me and my best friend would sing ABBA songs on the school trips LOL - we didn't care. There is a song called 'The Girl with the Golden Hair' by them - it was meant to be a whole musical.

I can't stand the Mamma Mia movie, the only scene I like is with the two younger ones in love singing 'Lay all your love on me' (I love that song) - because they're the only ones that can sing in that movie LOL smile I was thinking why have they cast all these ppl that can't sing? It was just to get top stars in the movie. They didn't even have to sing as part of their auditions - ridiculous I think. Love ABBA though smile

Steven, "The Girl with the Golden Hair," is one of my favorite songs by them.

When I was in chorus in 8th grade, my teacher asked me to sing that song as a solo. I was so excited - but too scared to do it. What a sad day as I left school that day.

Okay, I do agree, most of the actors in Mama Mia.... well, yeah, their singing is a bit off, isn't it LOL. But I think the movie is just funny.

There's another movie that has lots of ABBA music in it. I think it's Muriel's Wedding.

Yeah, Muriel's Wedding is a funny film - I love the way she uses their music to lift her up and inspire her to do all the things she wants to do. "You're awful Murial"" LOL - that's one of mine and my friends lines in an Aussie accent - cos they say it a lot in the movie haha.

Yeah, Mamma Mia is very popular, lots of people love it. It did have it's funny moments. The stage show is meant to be great because everyone gets up and dances and sings along to the songs.

That's ashame you couldn't sing the song. I remember I did something similar - it was in a group and I just mimed while they sand LOL. ABBA songs are really difficult to sing because the girls voices, Agnetha's a soprano and Frieda's just down if I remember correctly - that's why they sound so in unison.

If you've ever seen ABBA week on X Factor or Idol - ABBA always seperates the ones who can really sing from the ones who can't. They're amazing in my eyes. There music is so joyful, but it's also so truthful and tragic toward the end when they were going through their divorces - that's when they wrote a lot of their best music. Like Fleetwood mac (is that how you spell it? LOL)

Good Morning Steven,

Yes, Fleetwood Mac did come to a rather sad ending, didn't they.

I know... I was SOOOO sad, but just too afraid to sing that song!! I had no idea ABBA songs were difficult to sing. I must fall into the same range as one of them.

Now Steven, I'm all excited to add an ABBA song to my list of songs!!! Though I do Fernando already.... I want to add something else now!

I've never seen Factor X or Idol. That's so cool they have ABBA week!!!

And I never knew that their music took on a more tragic turn toward the end.

Though I always wondered about "The Winner Takes it All." That was my favorite song when I had a crush on one of my first loves and he hadn't yet discovered I was the love of his life LOL!

I'll have to go see what their last couple of CDs were.

Thanks Steven!!! I've learned so much about them!!

Linda, isn't Dancing Queen a joyful song!! I love how Steven says they were just a joyful band. It's so true! Almost any of their songs always made me want to get up and sing or dance!

Deanna, I love talking about ABBA smile - so any time smile

Yeah, 'The Winner Takes It All' is actually my favorite song ever. I think the lyrics are so beautiful and truthful, even though they're so sad.

If you can get hold of 'Super Trouper' the album. or 'The Visitors' in particular has a more sombre note. 'One Of us' is similar to 'The Winner Takes It All' in subject matter, and 'The Day Before You Came' is one of the best songs ever written IMO. It's like a short story with this beautiful, haunting music. Have you heard the song 'I know Him So Well' (Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson) from the musical Chess? That was written by Benny and Bjorn - and you can tell it was meant for the two girls. That's another one of my favorites too smile

I remember in music school talking to this boy, he was being rude about ABBA, and I was trying to explain to him how much depth they actually put into a lot of their song lyrics - he was only familiar with a few songs. There is such honesty in their lyrics, and I love the tone of the girls voices - you can hear they're Sweedish and so it comes across quite innocent at times, I feel.

It must be great to be singing. I remember when I was singing on stage it brought me so much joy and happiness. I still have demo's from my original music LOL - that seems so long ago now, though it was only about six years. Being on stage is such fun though isn't it? smile

'Dancing Queen' always seems to get everyone on the dance floor no matter what their age. So many great songs...

Awww Steven, I LOVE this song!!!! I've never heard it, so thanks for recommending it.

The Day Before You Came

I remember hearing Super Trouper when I was younger, but I didn't hear it enough to remember it, so when I saw it in the movie, Mama Mia, I had a huge flash-back LOL!!!

So what kind of music did you sing Steven? That's so cool!!! Being on stage IS fun!!

Hard to choose a favourite Deanna and Steven, but just love I Have a Dream. Never get tired of hearing it.

Saw ABBA perform in Cologne and Amsterdam where the audience ranged from a mass of early teenagers and twenties, to 'very, very much older', the impression they made was electric, and they sang livedoes that even happen any longer?

Then, many years later, when my eldest son was at Uni., and that was not so long ago, he said the favourite music played at just about everything was ABBA. Their music, and as a group, crossed generations all those years back and still does so.

Perhaps not everything in Mama Mia was in tune, but for me anyway that was a part of the films charm, had it on DVD and found it a great feel good movie, for grey wintery days.

ABBA not only left a legacy of super music, their words were often evocative and somehow they stirred emotions and left memories, a combination which made them special then, and now. It really is Thank You for the Music, they are easy to remember and hard to forget, even more especially because they have never really gone away.

Love ABBA and I love "Muriel's Wedding (a few years ago I made a lens review of the movie which has one of my favorite scenes "Fabba Abba" performing Waterloo).

Favorite songs:

* Knowing Me, Knowing You
* Take a Chance on Me
* I Have a Dream
* Chiquitita
* Fernando
* Voulez Vous
* The Name of the Game
* Waterloo
AND Dancing Queen of course.

I'm sure there are probably more. I might have to get an ABBA fix now. LOL

Good Morning Francine, and thank you SO much for posting the link to "I Had a Dream."

I didn't recognize it at first, but as it's playing in the background, I am remembering I used to love it!

I agree, I think that ABBA has been able to offer something that no other artist has quite been able to accomplish.

What great music to start off my day!!

Hi Moe! I agree - an ABBA fix is in order this morning LOL.

And thanks for sharing your review - I just added Muriel's Wedding to my netflix queue!!! I'll watch it tonight!

Okay, here's one we haven't played yet! Eagle by ABBA.

Another of my faves. I used to play this one over and over - it's so mesmerizing.

Deanna you're most welcome - I'm glad you liked the song smile I used to sing pop music and soft pop rock. Though I like music frm all genres, they were the most fun to sing for me. I think singing is the happiest job someone could probably have.

Francine - I'm so, so envious you got to see ABBA live. That would've been amazing!

I just realized ABBA werent that big in the USA compared to Europe, the UK and Australia. I was listning to them just a few hours ago on my Ipod LOL. When I was in Uni everyone loved them as well, we used to go into the kitchen drinking wine and singing ABBA songs and Phantom of the Opera oddly enough LOL. And those notes are hard to reach LOL.

How have I not stumbled on this thread before? I adore ABBA they are so incredibly talented. Too many fantastic songs for me to pick just one favorite, but many of the best ones have been mentioned already "Dancing Queen," "Eagle," "Thank You for the Music," "Chiquitita" (great for harmonizing), "One of Us," etc.

What about "Gimme Gimme Gimme"? Awesome chord progressions.

Of cos I remember ABBA! my favorite ABBA song is definately Dancing Queen.
I just love everything about this band, their lyrics always, always touches my heart strings.

Did anyone watch the movie MAMA MIA, it starred another of my favorite stars Meryl Streep, and it featured a lot of ABBA songs.

I love 'On and on and on' - that used to be one of my top favorites when I was younger - it's such a fun self empowering song smile I wish they'd done a video for it, I always can imagine what it would've been like. They did release one - but it was a mash up of their other music videos.

Just thought of another song "The Day before you came". That song is so beautiful and sad. The clip is also very emotive as well.

There was a vote over here in the UK (because ABBA are still really celebrated here) for the nations favorite top twenty songs. The top three were:

1. The Winner Takes it All
2. Dancing Queen
3. The Day Before you Came

And the winner takes it all and the day before you came are two of my all time favorite songs, so I was really pleased. I like dancing queen, but their slow songs have so much feeling in them - they're amazing.
