I'm a bit tardy in stating what I saw this past weekend... How about a Bald Eagle soaring over the tops of the trees, encircling a group of OA Scouts that were dressed in ceremonial costumes & undergoing a best team competion.

< Wonder if the eagle was eyeballing the fake feathers? >

Ayeah, could have been. Or maybe he was choosing the best team.

I saw a hawk swooping down to catch a squirrel a few minutes ago. Squirrel got away.

Pardon my belatedness. Our trip to Cumberland Island on Sunday provided quite a few sightings. At the start of our hike, there were two wild turkeys with beautiful feathers. On Nightengale Trail we spooked a doe. It bolted up the sand dune, paused for just a moment and took off down the other side. Couldn't get my camera up fast enough.

There were about 20 wild horses grazing on the grounds at the ruins of Dungeness. After just a few shot my camera died! I'm hoping I got a few of the 3 young ones in the herd. We walked right through the largest group. One of the little ones was so cute, pawing at the ground, but staying close to momma.

Our hike back to catch the ferry was interrupted by a dispute between stallions. I'm not sure what the Grey did to upset the Chestnut. But once it was over, the Grey remained on the road glaring at us like it was our fault. After a minute or so, I commented "Hey, we didn't have anything to do with that!" He sauntered off to the roadside, but continued to glare at us "pesky humans."

OOPS! Forgot about the dolphins. Two were swimming down river as we waited to get underway and I saw another on our return to the mainland. It was so nice to be on the river, if only for 45 minutes on a crowded ferry.

I saw a large Common Black Hawk today. He has been around for a few days now. His wing span is larger than the Red Tailed Hawk, but his body is much smaller. He soars quite low over the little mountain looking for prey.

With all the wildfires down south, I wonder if some birds are being displaced ... looking for new hunting grounds?

I saw a small hedgehog this morning! Does that count?

Not quite as impressive as horses, dolphins, eagles and fox cubs, but it was cute!

I have never seen a hedgehog in person. Of course that counts, Linda. I have heard they make good pets -- but one needs lots of education to own and care for a hedgehog.

I saw a flock of seagulls (what is a group of seagulls called?) earlier. It is so strange to see seagulls circling over the little mountain. Usually I see only hawks out there soaring or hovering.

Last night we rode out to see the wild horses. We saw only a few way up on the foothills outside their canyon.

Down in the meadows, we must have seen over a hundred Marmots. Lots of little new ones and mostly the older ones, some very fat and happy looking.

There was a large herd of mule deer in the alfalfa fields. They are looking very scruffy because they are shedding their dark reddish brown winter coats.

Phyllis, I wish that I could have been there. I love seeing marmots when we go to Colorado.
