John, how protective was Loki, and how did she display the protectiveness? I was remember a lot about my wolf when I was young. I remember how protective he was of our family.

I think all pets are best friends, I simply wouldn't have it any other way. We share everything, when it is permissible. They are always with me. We understand each other, on some level that I don't fully understand.

I loved the story about Loki! I am LUCKY I don't have to wait to read the next installments smile
Wolf - Loki's Story If you haven't read it yet folks, it is a must read! It will touch you to the very depth of your soul.

You were lucky to have had such an amazing friend, a soul friend. Not many people have the chance to experience, what I would call a miracle. A lot of people are capable of seeing an animal beyond a possession.

Sam sounds wonderful. I know my sun conures are as you put it cheeky or just downright spoiled. Your relationship with your wolf was wonderful, to bad more people don't experience that type of relationship.

I have been extremely fortunate to have had some very good animal companions. Loki was the first. Then I had Athena - a marvelous Blue and Gold Macaw. She was a riot. I could literally have minor conversations with her, she had a developed sense of humour - as she would laugh if I did something stupid. Like the time I tripped over the computer cord... almost fell on my rear. All I heard for a half a day when I walked into the room was Athena Laughing at me... in my voice! She was special, but I was forced to find a good home for her when I moved to Australia. I tried for 3 years to get permission from the Gov. to bring her in, but I finally had ot make a choice, keep her in waiting, or let her go.. and find her a great home. Hardest decision I had to make, but her happiness is what was more important. I am one that believes sometimes it is the animals that pick you. Every time I have had a special animal companion, it was the animal that chose me.. All I did was choose to listen - and I was rewarded beyond measure. I consider myself to be very fortunate to have had such good friends :) I think it is in the genetic make up of conures to be cheeky. They have all the personality of a large Macaw, but condensed into such a little body.. They cannot help but be Cheeky!!!

Loki never had to go into a defensive or even an offensive position. She would take her cues from me, if I was "normal" she would be fine. IF I was a little apprehensive, she would get into a cautious stance, and keep checking the surroundings. But I cannot remember her ever getting her hackles raised. There was one time I "tested" her. I came home late, walked into the back yard and had a light behind me ( so she could not make out my features). Was wearing a London Fog Trench coat, as it was winter, and the wind was not in her direction. She came out into view, stopped about 15 feet from me, and stood her ground. Obviously checking me out, trying to figure out what I was doing there, and letting me make the first move. I had the position of dominance, ( eyes being above her eye elvel, ), She was on three feet, the right front foot off the ground... ready to make a move - if needed. But she had lowered her head, and tail was straight down. ( Cues, that she is not playing. She was actually analyzing me, and letting me know that she is serious.) As she leaned slightly towards me, I squatted down, so I was at her eye level... This had an immediate reaction, she eased back, slightly raised her head... But held her ground. Remember she still could not smell me, hear me, as I was not talking, and could not make out any details to help her figure out who I was. This lasted a few minutes, till I whispered one word.... Loki!. She immediately sparked up. Head held high, ears forwards, and tail swatting flies in all directions. This was immediately followed by her bounding to me in two giant leaps, and knocking my over on my back... I was in almost hysterical laughter, as Loki was busy licking my face, and greeting me in a wonderful bear hug and play time wrestle. Had not thought about that in years. LOL. I hope that answers your question, Diana :)

I have to tell you, Loki and I had a house across the street from a very old cemetery... The cemetery did not have walls, as they do now - and that made for some great fun. Inevitably some younger kids ( obviously teens), would play hide and seek in the cemetery at nite. You know they were all ready partially psyched out as they were playing in a cemetery; this gave Loki and I every opportunity to "empower" those feelings of dread, apprehension, and down right fear itself. You have to understand, that Wolves were no longer native to this part of California, and having one so close was great fun. I would wait till they were well into their play, and coax Loki into howling. Picture a dark night, no street lights around, your young and probably close to wetting yourself as you are playing in a cemetery - and you hear a noise.... Wait, was that....a.... WOLF!!! A wolf howl is unmistakable.. WE all grew up watching the old scary movies with monsters and vampires.... and Wolves!.. We know that sound.. and city folk fear that sound when they are playing in cemeteries. ( And I swear, Loki knew EXACTLY what she was doing. She KNEW she was scaring these kids, and she LOVED it.) Loki's long melodic soulful howl carrying on through the night.. Instantly 6-7 teens stop ( no pun intended) dead in their tracks. Looking... looking to the left, to the right.. staring ahead.. scared to look behind them - as everything inside says monsters come from behind.... and Wolves are ALWAYS traveling with monsters... ( Loki howls again.......) Then it happens... one will ALWAYS scream. That scream is a chain reaction... now you have 6-7 screaming teens, running in 20--30 different directions... Loki and I are sitting on the porch, enjoying a cup of ice tea, and laughing. One look at Loki, and you know she is laughing with you ( and at the kids).

THe first time I brushed her during her molt was amazing. I could not believe how much fur was coming off her coat, Literally one swipe with the brush ( rectangle brush with what looks like heaps of staples poking out.) and the brush was completely chockered full with loose fur. Loki LOVED the grooming sessions, and I think even more so during her molt. She would sit for over a half our totally still as I brushed her fur, totally content and happy :)

I always think how awfully hot, itchy and heavy that fur must feel. There was a guy that live near us when I live in the woods in Norther MN. His dogs had so many ticks on them it looks like a continuous moving motion on the poor dog. The kids would walk all the way up there, sit on he porch, and detick those poor dogs. Then I'd de tick my kids lol.

FOrtunately I never had an animal with a tick.. I have actually had one on my arm.. bloody buggers.. But, never a pet. Loki was part DIVA I do believe. She LOVED being groomed, and loved her baths. Well, I think she enjoyed being towel dried, then blow dried more so. ( During winter, I would spend a long time blow drying her. Sounds funny, as she had a coat for winter, but she loved it.) She knew my moods also.. Knew when I was in a good mood, or when I was stressed from work. Even when I was upset.. she would lay on the floor facing me.. with her eyes turned up to look at me. Everytime I noticed her doing that, I would start to smile.. then she would jump on me and start a wresting match. Funny thing was.. after that I wasnt upset anymore. LOL
