It's a new year! Can we think up a bird for each letter of the alphabet? If you want to play, see how far we've gotten so far and then add a bird name that starts with the next letter in the sequence!

I'll start with

A is for Anhinga

in fact I have a bonus, here's a picture of an anhinga I took in Florida in the Everglades

Oops. That's what happens when you try to play several board word games at once.

We have whitebreasted ones generally but my neighbor told me that a redbreasted one appeared on the feeder in their yard.

QUAIL

(I, too, LOVE puffins!!! Do you know the puffin poem? I remember learning it when I was a kid. I'll have to go see if I can find it. If I do, I'll post it for ya!)

Shelley

Ok, I found it! It's kind of juvenile, now that I look at it but I was a very small kid when I loved listening to it. It may be silly but it has a nice rhythm!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There Once Was a Puffin - by Florence Page Jaques
Oh, there once was a puffin
Just the shape of a muffin,
And he lived on an island
In the
bright
blue
sea!
He ate little fishes,
That were most delicious,
And he had them for supper
And he
had them
for tea.
But this poor little Puffin,
He couldn''t play nothin',
For he hadn't anybody
To
play
With at all.
So he sat on his island,
And he cried for awhile, and
He felt very lonely,
And he
felt
very
small.
Then along came the fishes,
And they said, "If you wishes,
You can have us for playmates,
Instead
of
for
tea!"
So they now play together,
In all sorts of weather,
And the puffin eats pancakes,
Like you
and
like
me.
Oh great, a bird that begins with X?
I had to check my Sibley book for this one. It is Xema sabini, or a Sabine's Gull
Woo hoo!! We got through A to Z! Now it becomes more difficult. Let's do it a second time through and try not to repeat names from the first pass, although in a pinch I suppose that's better than nothing
