i was wondering...

is there an easy way to clean a 3 gallon tank after your fish has been sick?? nebbie got ANOTHER parasite (this time ick) and last time, i cleaned the tank with bleach, cleaned everything in it, treated it afterwards for a day with dechlor treatment, and it happens again, less than 3 weeks later. im ticked. it took me a lot of time to clean his tank set up, since i had to let the bleach and the dechlor set. our town is going through a lovebug infestation as well, so i cant leave the tank and stuff in the sun to soak.

i just got the tank almost cycled...i just cant believe this. i put in preventatives!! nothing but nebbie should have been able to live through all the medicine. hes in a small bowl on betta fix and his ick cleared up (i caught it QUICK, only about 7-10 tiny white dots were on him) and now...im fuming about spending my labor day holiday sanitizing his tank. its not because i dont love him...only because its a big tank and its heavy and its hard to clean it.

nat

Sthenno...if it's ick all the time that he is getting....try treating the whole tank...gravel and all...with some heavy doses of ick medicine. Try doubling the recommended dose and let it sit for a week and have the water temp up to at least 85....(*Just DONT have Nebbie in the tank when you do this!*)....Make sure you rinse everything off real good before trying Neb in it again. Double check with Jilly before you try this, to make sure it will be o.k. to do. She knows WAY more than me about stuff like this.

Anyway, good luck with this..and while Nebbie is waiting for his tank back..feed him up good on some live foods and stuff..to strengthen him up. Less chance of coming down with something else when you reintroduce him. Good luck !

hmmm. SOunds like a pain in da buttocks, eh? I would agree with Emg, put Nebbie in a small infirmary bowl and treat him for two weeks while you treat the empty tank, too. Ick has several life stages so you need to make sure you kill the protozoans when they come out of the cysts. What meds are you using?

im using aquari-sol, salt and betta fix (mostly bettafix) and he seems to have lost all the ick, but he cant come out yet, hes only been in since thursday.
in the tank, i use novaqua/amquel and aquari-sol (i take out the filter for a few hours when i put the AS in) and also salt and conditioners. i use stress coat as well. i remember when i was younger there was a medicine my mom used called ICK and it was in a blue bottle with an orange fish. is there anything like that i can use to treat the tank? i think ill use a whole bottle of something this time and let the filter run (without the carbon). that way it will get in all the nooks and crannies.
my poor baby is so confused! he doesnt know why hes not in his home anymore...

wow! is it harsh to use meds in the filter? i thought we couldn't do that? anyways, when i clean my filters, i just get in there with an old tooth brush, some boiling water (if needed) and finish it up with a vinegar rinse (soak if nessecary).

i too have suspicions of ick in my tank, not sure though (i'll get into that in another thread), however i found it nice to every now and then take the gravel, strain it through a plastic seive, do a mild scrub down while in the sieve (just to grind up and remove most of the yukies). recently i've been experimenting with boiling the gravel for a little bit to kill ALL the nasties. i figure they can't possibly live, right? anyways, might wanna try that, but only if you have real rock gravel or epoxy coated gravel, if you do it with glass be sure to be very carefule about chipping or shattering the glass when placing it in or pouring out. i haven't checked the temperature resistance on some of the plastic gravel.

ok, there's my two cents. apologies for lengthy posting (it's becom a habit now). <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> :rolling:

also, sthenno, you mentioned you couldn't put your fishy in the window to sun because of the lovebug infestation. bettas live to eat live foods like those. so, is there some other reason they might be of a nuisance to our little guy?

i usually feed my boys whatever i find crawling around my house. their favourites are silverfish and the occasional fruit fly (my pitcher plants usually eat all the fruit flies & knats). anyways, i was just curious.

Yep, I feed my Oscars whatever I find flying or crawling around, and all the other fish that die. keep the cycle of life going!
