One of my favorite sandwiches is a Monte Cristo. I like the stuffed fat and the edges sealed. Has anyone ever tried making one at home?

I use a stainless steel vegetable steamer insert or basket to put each sandwich into the oil then a rack to let it rest after frying. They are a bit work intensive, but WELL worth the effort in my opinon.

I have never tried a Monte Cristo and I feel like a missing something really good...

I would like to try it out first before cooking at home but it is not a sandwich I see on many menus.

Sometimes we have a loose definition of sandwich!

I never thought of trying it that way. I have just grilled it like a grilled cheese sandwich. I cut it in triangles, dip it in the egg batter and grill on all sides. I will try the basket insert next time.

Sometimes a Monte Cristo sandwich is sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a strawberry sauce. Because it has all that ham and cheese inside, I prefer it without the sauce or pwd. sugar.
