I know David Tennant was triumphant as Doctor Who - suitably 'locuted' with his proper English diction - but he actually has the most gorgeous Scottish accent, and it only adds to his charm. How could he sound so perfectly English? Similarly in the British TV series Casanova - some years ago - no one would ever have suspected he may be more comfortable in a kilt - with or without the drawers! - than in breeches and a silk cravat!

Somehow Scots pull off brilliant English accents. In fact, some of my fave actors are from North of the Border. Most notably, Tennant, James MacAvoy and Robert Carlyle. I do love all their original brogues though

Eileen
My understanding is that Russell T Davies asked Tennant to use an English accent for the role. It is good to see the character of Amy Pond (played by Karen Gillan who was born in Inverness) using her Scottish accent with the current Doctor (Matt Smith).

I love Scottish accents. I would love to speak with one. I hope that wasn't offensive. It wasn't meant to be. I just love the sound of the accent.

Lori I didn't see that comment as offensive and do not think people would take it that way. You could always ask for a dream where you do speak in a Scottish accent.

I also think a real Scottish lilt sounds lovely Lori.
My eldest son came back with one which lasted for a short time after he had been studying in Scotland for four years, and yes it was just super to hear it.
Like most countries there are some Scottish dialects, or accents, that are virtually indecipherable, you should hear some of the German ones.....difficult is an understatement..but somehow the Scottish lilt always sounds not only attractive but really rather romantic.

Hi Asha - just came by to look at your site and saw your post. Yes - Amy Pond with her lovely Scottish accent is a nice touch in the new Doctor Who. And the Scottish actress who played the young Amy in 'The Eleventh Hour' - the prog with the crack in Amy's bedroom wall - was absolutely brilliant too, really fresh and natural.

Eileen did you know that Caitlin Blackwood who plays the young girl is in fact actress Karen Gillan's niece? So Amy Pond younger and older are actually related off screen...

Ah...that really starts to make sense, and no, I didn't know that. She really looks like her! They say that having red hair can be the result of a genetic 'mutation' - in the best sense of the word. But in this case, red hair obviously runs in the family. Also I think it tends to be prevalent with Celtic races. I thought the young actress was just terrific. Maybe she'll be the Doctor's sidekick years down the line (in whatever incarnation he appears in!).

Interesting idea, Eileen - quite possible, and imagine the intersting storylines that could come out if she ends up looking very like her aunt!
