I'm a newbie tatter. I have several books and have looked at videos online. However, I cannot figure out how to make my second ring close to the first ring. I make the first one successfully, and then the second ring, but when I pull the thread to close the ring, it slides far away on the thread, leaving about 8 to 12 inches of thread in between the two rings. I've been trying different ways to wrap the thread, different places to place the ds, but have not been successful. Anyone envision what I'm doing wrong, or how to help me? Thanks.

Lauren, it is a common problem. You are working the wrong thread. I have a set of step by step photos to explain the problem and how to fix it. Please email me at AKTATTER@aol.com

I had the same problem when I started learning tatting (over 30 years ago, now). What AKTATTER said is correct, another way of putting it is that you need to get your stitches to "flip" or transfer to the thread that is wrapped around your hand. The shuttle thread becomes the "core" that slides inside the stitches.
This is the "trick" of tatting, once you've caught on to that, the rest is pretty simple.
