i recently bought a magnify glass and decided to take a look at bettas through it. to my dismay i found several very very small "holes" around the heads of two of my boys. it appears as precise tiny "holes" (if that's what they are), as though someone stuck them with a needle.
i looked all over the internet to find out about this HITH disease thing. i found only stuff regarding Oscars and Discus. plus the photos they provided look NOTHING like what i saw. it was like comparing two peices of paper, one punched with a hole-puncher and one that just had holes torn through it. very different.
i was wondering if anyone ever saw such a thing on their bettas? is this normal?
my guys seem perfectly happy and healthy ('cept for minor fin-rot). i saw nothing on the internet about bettas getting HITH. perhaps someone here knows more. i certainly don't!

Really, though, I don't know ...maybe it's just a normal thing for bettas...I'll have to take a look at mine and see.

EMG if you do, have light shining down from above, helps to see the hole's shadow. that's how i found they were holes an not just weird lighting. they are the same colour as the scales they occupy so it can be hard to spot. or find a husband's magnify glass. *shrug*

Mel,

I haven't noticed any holes in my bettas, but if your guys are swimming and blowing bubbles, I bet they'll be fine.

Hugs,
Nan

hey yeah! that's another thing. my guys haven't blown any bubble nests since i bought them. even before they had bubblers. are they not happy? they sure could fool me if they werent.

and i have a sneakin suspicion that the holes i've been veiwing are actually something like sensory pits. some fish have these along the lateral line or around the head. small pits that pick up things like water movement, vibration, smells, chemical composition and the like. of course the function of the sensory pit varies between species and not all species have them.

just a thought. but i've decided not to worry unless they look infected. also, did you know that fishies can hear better than humans in most cases?!

Yeah, I guess sound travels better in water than it does in the air. Everytime I put something down on the table, all the fry jump...in unison!

Mel,

I bet you're right about the holes. Nothing to worry about. As far as bubble nests, my guys don't blow them all the time. Sounds like you have some swinging single guys right now who don't want to be tied down to a nest.

hahahaha
that's too funny Nann. i thought bubbles meant they're happy. two of the guys ibought had huge nests in thier cups when i bought them. sure sign of good fishie. but they all seem happy to me.
thanks for the reassurance guys.

ENJOY!!
