I'm looking for an anti-virus software package for my iMac that won't gum up the works and slow everything down to a crawl. I've tried Norton & McAfee and it's really awful how they make the whole system just crawl. I went to the Apple site and there's Intego software available, but, it tends to create such strong barriers that even allowable downloads, such as from iTunes or other trusted sites, is blocked.

Can anyone give me any advice on this? Anyone have experience with the same problems?

Thanks all,

Hi Nancy,
Macs don't really need any sort of anti-virus software - that's part of their appeal. The only time Macs contract malware - trojans specifically - it's usually linked to some sort of pirated stuff.

That being said, I did a little research for you and if your Mac does happen to contract something, you could try Clam XAV - it's free and you don't have to use it often, just when you suspect there's a problem. The Clam software is the only one I found that received consistent praise from Mac users.

Hope that helps - let us know!

That's why I love that my kids have MACs. We have just had to deal with too many P.C. viruses in this house LOL!

I got one last year from a coloring page site! Yikes! Now I'm using Norton.

I'm telling you Deanna, as a long-time PC user, the Mac is starting to look better and better... I've been straddling the fence for years, deciding if I was ready to make the "big switch." I think I might break down and try it this coming Spring.
