Of course there are. Most people I know speak English and a little French, or speak French and a little English. I know quite a few people who are perfectly fluent in either language. I'm not fluent in French- I have trouble writing it, and sometimes mangle verb conjugations- but I understand fine if someone is speaking French (as long as they aren't speed-talkers), and I can read it even better.

It's hard not to pick it up, since French is a mandatory class up to Grade 9 where I live, and schools very much push it even in the later grades. There are also more job opportunities if you are bilingual- many government, service and tourism positions require at least some fluency in both French and English.

Oh, well. C'est la vie!

Hi Melissa, I did BOTH Spanish & French in school back in Jamaica (now age 52). Does "C'est la vie!" mean "That is life" or something close? I had this real old lady teaching French and I remember the importance of the tongue placement. Back then I HATED the classes, passed them but now regret not continuing. I think it is such a romantic language smile Thanks for responding to my post!!

I was born in Quebec and still live here and my first language is French. I wanted to learn English because I was tired of dubbed movies (i was a separatist back then too so that right there tells you how much i hate dubbing) but here in schools when you learn English it's like one word per year so I learned all by myself when I was a teenager (with a little help from my mom who learned it when she was young and her family lived in New Brunswick for a while) watching television (and im a moron so that means english is an easy language to learn). Speaking French while in Quebec is not recommended since like that you can understand separatists when they talk, it's not nice to say the least! And also I understand how people who try to learn French say that it is hard because I have a lot of problems with that language eventhough it's my first (i always read instructions in english because when i do in french its like another language to me). I want to finish high school and French is the only class that scares me.
