Some of a machine's suitability for a rider depends on the rider's physical size.

The 250 is a small machine; it makes good power, but it is small. To give an idea, 3 of the last 4 250 cc Grand Prix champions have been shorter than 5' 6" and weighed less than 125 pounds.

If it turns out you enjoy riding, you may soon be unhappy with it.

I recommend 500 cc machines as a size which a person may choose to move up from, but will never have to move up from.

They are bigger than any 250s but not so big that they are daunting to smaller statured riders.

Any motorcycle can get away from a rider, especially an inexperienced rider. Higher powered machines will get away easier and usually with worse results, but even a 250 has enough power to get away.
